Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave – Why Late-Recruited Units Have Weak Stats

In Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, characters you recruit near the end of Part 1 join at a high level but with stats far below what a trained unit of the same level carries. A recruit can show a strong set of growth percentages on paper and still arrive several points short in almost every category, which makes many of them hard to justify fielding without heavy investment.

Quick answer: Late recruits join at a level scaled to the current chapter, but their auto-leveled stats appear to apply only their personal growth rates and skip class growth scaling, leaving their base stats well under a unit you leveled yourself.

How large the stat gap actually is

Compare late-joining Gaitz with a trained unit from his class to see the gap. He appears only on Dietrich’s route, joining as a level-37 Bardinger with a rating of 144, 25 Strength, and 21 Defense. Creek is also a Bardinger; at level 42, he has a rating of 189, 31 Strength, and 35 Speed. Their levels are close, but their stats are far apart.

The gap holds even against a lower-level unit. Io, at level 36, carries 27 Defense and a 154 rating while being one level below Gaitz. The pattern repeats across the roster: the longer you wait to bring a character in, the further behind the curve they land.

The missing class scaling theory

Every unit in the game has two sets of growth rates that stack. Personal growths come from the character, and the class adds its own growths on top. When you field a unit and level it up through combat, both sets feed into each stat gain.

The leading explanation for weak late recruits is that the game auto-levels them off-screen using only their personal growth rates, leaving the class portion out of the calculation. That would explain why a unit with high listed totals still arrives thin: the numbers on the status screen assume class scaling that never got applied during those off-screen levels.

A related read is that base stats are derived from a cumulative growth score rather than simulated one level-up at a time, which produces the same flat, under-statted result. Either way, the outcome a player sees is a high level attached to a low stat line.

Inyoni is the one unit that works against the theory. She has a 50% personal Strength growth with lower Speed and Dexterity growths, yet she recruits at level 36 with solid 23 Speed and 25 Dexterity alongside 32 Strength. Her line looks like class scaling did apply, which keeps the mechanic from being fully confirmed.

Which recruits are hit hardest

Characters originally introduced in Part 1 but recruited late suffer the most. Peppe, who joins through the same Bertrand paralogue as Gaitz, arrives as a Rogue at level 33 with just 13 Strength, low enough that his attacks frequently deal zero damage across both hits.

The sting is worse for units with excellent growth totals. Ninae has the 8th-highest total growths in the game at 375, including 45% in HP, Strength, Magic, and Resistance, yet she recruits at level 33 with a rating of only 145. Alexandra sits in a similar spot with a 370 total. These are characters built to snowball if raised early, and recruitment timing cancels most of that potential.

Unlocking these units is itself demanding on Dietrich’s route. Ninae needs Support Level 3, Renown 8, and a Paradise Fish, while Gaitz requires clearing a paralogue that is only available for a single day plus maxed support and renown. Pouring that effort in and receiving an under-statted unit is what has made the issue a talking point.

Early-recruited versions keep their stats

The same character recruited early tells a completely different story. On Leda’s route, Sirocco can be brought in and built as an Ovate, reaching level 39 with a 222 rating and 34 Magic, 34 Speed, and 21 Defense. A Myrmidon Sirocco recruited later sits at level 31 with a 147 rating. Same unit, vastly different payoff, decided almost entirely by when they joined.

Recruited early and raised as an Ovate, Sirocco reaches a 222 rating, far above a late Myrmidon version of the same unit. Shown at 03:16 in Jay Dunna’s video. Image: Intelligent Systems

This is why the game effectively rewards recruiting as early as your Support and Renown allow, even if you plan to bench the unit until later. A benched early recruit keeps the stats it earned; a late pull does not get them back.

Ways the gap can still close

A late recruit is not permanently stuck. The merging causality mechanic can produce outsized gains on a single level-up, shown by Dietrich jumping from level 51 to 52 with +4 Strength and +4 Defense in one go. That kind of spike can pull a lagging unit back toward the rest of the roster over time.

Beyond that, the realistic avenues are a future game update that adjusts the scaling, or additional routes focused on other sub-lords such as Goliath or Gaitz that would let those characters be raised from the start. No official fix or follow-up route has been confirmed, so for now the dependable response is to recruit earlier and lean on merging and stat items to patch the units that arrive late.
