Lysward is a single-player survival game from Snowcastle Games set in a vast, sun-scorched desert in the fantasy world of Umbra. An updated preview demo pushes further into the opening act, letting players escape an underground facility as Kiran, learn to shape stone with magic, and build a shelter over an oasis while the desert sun constantly tries to kill them.
Quick answer: The updated Lysward demo lands on Steam on October 15th, extending the first act with the Tremor ability, crafting, a research tree run by the companion Gjorna, and base building that starts with a Core Chamber placed over water.
What Lysward is
You wake as Kiran, an amnesiac test subject with a strange device fused to his right forearm and a single name echoing in his head: Orren. Kiran escaped Notus Haven, an oppressive facility, and is stranded in a desert where daylight never ends. The loop mixes exploration, crafting, and magic with a survival setup that leans hard on environmental danger.
Snowcastle Games, the Oslo studio behind Earthlock and Ikonei Island, frames the demo as the first act of a story about recovering lost memories. It is a clear shift from the studio’s earlier, lighter adventures toward isolation and harsh survival systems.

Add to Google Preferences →Why the sun is the main threat
Solar radiation is an active hazard, not just a backdrop. Stand in direct sunlight for a few seconds too long and Kiran overheats, catches fire, and dies. A HUD warning reading Overheating! Seek Shelter! fires the moment you leave cover, and a central heat resistance meter tracks how close you are to combustion.

Survival means leaping between the shadows cast by rocks and crossing open dunes only in short bursts. Crafted gear such as Ragged Sandals, a Ragged Bandana, and a full clothing set each add Heat Resistance, and a consumable called Lysbound Salve grants a temporary +20 Heat Resistance for longer sprints.

Periodic flare sandstorms sweep the desert. As a storm forms, cloud cover briefly blocks the sun, but an active storm cuts visibility sharply and deals damage unless you reach shelter. The same heat also works in your favor: items dropped onto scorched sand cook with no fuel or fire, though leaving them too long burns them into Charcoal or Dry Dirt.
Kiran’s Amri abilities and the Tremor power
The arm device replaces basic survival tools with magic. Kiran channels “Intent” and Amri energy through gestures, and the demo starts him with Tremor, unlocked after drinking from a mystical basin that triggers a vision and a tutorial on focusing Intent.

Tremor shatters stone instantly rather than chipping away at it. You trace a circular glyph to crush rock barriers blocking cave paths, break mineral outcrops for Iron Ore, and dismantle skeletal remains for Bone. The same blast works on aggressive creatures when they get too close.

Breaking stone still takes time, so attempting to clear a barrier while standing in direct sun can leave Kiran to burn before the wall gives way. Clearing into shade first is the safer play.
Meeting Gjorna and the research tree
After crossing the dunes, Kiran succumbs to heat exhaustion. He comes to at the Lone Oasis, where Gjorna Embertusk, a hogbunny companion, is caring for him. Gjorna and Kiran escaped from Notus Haven as test subjects, modified to endure the Wastes; she becomes the focal point for restoring his memories.

Storms charge certain glowing resources scattered across the wastes, and these carry research data. Hand charged items such as stormcharged Gloamcaps to Gjorna, or deposit them on her storage table, and she converts them into three kinds of points: Construction, Ecology, and Survival. Spending those points in the research tree unlocks structural blueprints, clothing tiers, crafting benches, and consumables.
Early research nodes include a Basic Bandage and Splint, a full Ragged clothing set spun from Plant Fiber, and the Base Building Set that opens the adobe construction tree.
Gathering resources and solar cooking
Resource gathering runs through the desert flora, wildlife, and abandoned outposts. Agave-like plants drop Plant Fiber and Dry Dirt, while desert scorpions yield a Scorpion Carcass through simple kick-and-dash combat.

Spongemoss provides water. Toss Dried Spongemoss into a pool of still water to transform it into Spongemoss. Use it to quench thirst or fill a crafted Spongebottle, which gives +35 Water on the move. Cook food by placing it on hot sand, but desert birds will swoop down to steal anything left out too long.
Building a base over water
Shelter is how you ride out sandstorms and process materials. Construction needs a crafted Construction Tool, made from Charcoal and Plant Fiber, and every base must start with a Core Chamber placed over a natural water reservoir.
The Core Chamber’s bricks come from the sun. Mud and Plant Fiber craft into Wet Adobe Bricks, which bake into finished Adobe Bricks only after sitting in direct sunlight. The two Amri Conduits it requires are pulled from a mountain research facility, past door-switch puzzles and scorpion nests, in the upper control room.
| Material | Amount |
|---|---|
| Amri Conduit | 2 |
| Adobe Brick | 5 |
| Plant Fiber | 5 |
Once you have the materials, equip the Construction Tool and choose Core Chamber from the Modules menu. Turn it above an oasis pool, then place it. The structure stands on stilts over the water, with later station and module placements extending outward from it.
What the updated demo includes
The demo covers the first act of the story and layers several of Lysward’s core systems on top. Expect two unique abilities that double as survival tools, craftable gear built to withstand heat, core areas to scavenge, and desert creatures that may help you or hunt you. Snowcastle also lists the Icarus, a drivable speeder with built-in storage for crossing the massive desert, and a grid-based inventory where every item occupies physical space, turning each packing decision into a trade-off.
The game carries a To be announced release date, so the demo is the way to try it now. You can add it to your wishlist and grab the build from the Lysward demo page on Steam, with the updated version going live on October 15th.
