The Valor Mortis Journal tab with Characters, Enemies, Locations and Notes cards

Valor Mortis runs as one continuous story, and the whole thing is split into numbered chapters you can track from the journal. Each chapter is a single Main Quest, and the game marks your place as you move through it. If you want the count and the exact order, both are below.

Quick answer: Valor Mortis’s main campaign contains 11 chapters. Press Tab to open the menu, then select QUESTS to check which chapter is marked Active.

Where the chapters live in the menu

Under MAIN QUEST you will see “Active” and “Completed” entries. Each one shows “CHAPTER” with a Roman numeral, the chapter name, an illustrated card, and a journal line for every stage you have reached. The newest stage sits on top, and finished stages are ticked.

Side quests are separate from the 11 main chapters and do not change this count. The chapter running right now is always the Active one, and its newest stage line tells you where to go when you lose your bearings.

The entries below name every chapter and give the opening journal line for each one. If you want to go in cold, stop after the first few.

I. REVIVAL

Opens with the line, “I awoke amidst the dead on the battlefield, my mind a blank as to how I came to be here.” You start in The Battlefield. It ends with the first fight against General Lothaire, the Eagle-Bearer, which you are meant to lose.

II. REGROUP

Begins with, “I met the first person not infected with the plague since I awoke on the battlefield.” That person is Lucjan Skawinski, who sends you after soldiers under the tricolour banner. The region is the Valley of Ashes, ending at the Abandoned Church, where the Lothaire rematch takes place.

III. RENDEZVOUS

Starts with, “James asked me to find his comrade, Louis, who had gone to a nearby village and never returned.” The region is the Fallen Village. The boss is the Iron Marshall, and you come away with the Grappling ability.

Set in Napoleon’s Prison.

XI. REFLECTION

This is the campaign’s concluding chapter, ending in a showdown with Entity, Voice of the Void.

Using the chapter numbers while you play

The chapter numbers do more than mark your progress. Collectible and side quest lists are usually sorted by chapter, so knowing which one you are in makes those lists easy to follow.
