The Shadow is the Arcana sealed from Death, and it hands Rose Belmont two things she cannot get anywhere else early on: the Soul Harvest spell and the Double Jump skill. You claim it by beating Death inside the painted version of Notre-Dame, but getting into that fight takes a specific key item, the right Arcana equipped, and a three-part organ puzzle solved in the correct order.

Quick answer: Equip The Artist Arcana and the brush, step into the Notre-Dame painting below the Clock Tower, play the giant organ’s three zodiac melodies, then defeat Death in the Transept to absorb The Shadow.

What you need before entering Notre-Dame

Two things gate the whole run. Without both equipped and in your inventory, the painting will not react when you interact with it.

  • The Artist Arcana with its Masterpiece ability, equipped from the Tarot menu.
  • Brauner’s brush, found in the room directly after the Occultist Arcana.

With The Artist equipped, Rose’s tarot reacts to an Arcanic Resonance near the painting. That reaction is the signal the portal is live. Nothing happens if you walk up with a different card active.

Step into the Notre-Dame painting

Go to the level beneath the Clock Tower, close to the Main Hall. The Notre-Dame painting is displayed there and appears on your map when you approach.

With The Artist equipped and the brush in hand, interact with the painting. This triggers a conversation between Rose, Brauner, and Carmilla, confirming the resonance has fired.

Once the dialogue ends, Rose steps through the frame into the Notre-Dame Cathedral. A short cutscene carries you inside.

You arrive in the Notre-Dame Main Hall. Entering the cathedral completes a Work of Mercy, shown by a banner on screen.

Solve the giant organ puzzle in three melodies

From the Main Hall, make your way to the Giant Organ. The floor in front of it is a keyboard of zodiac and celestial symbols. You play three separate melodies by stepping on the right symbols in order. Each correct sequence sets off an organ resonance and lights a note symbol on the pipes.

MelodyFloor key order
FirstLibra, Moon, Gemini, Sagittarius, Taurus
SecondScorpio, Leo, Aries, Pisces, Moon
ThirdCancer, Capricorn, Sun, Virgo, Aquarius

Play the first melody to start. The organ responds and the first note symbol appears.

The first melody is entered by stepping across the astrological floor keys. Shown at 01:40 in 100% Guides’s video. Image: KONAMI

Follow with the second sequence. Green energy builds around the organ as the second note locks in.

Finish with the third sequence to complete the puzzle and open the path upward.

Enter each melody as a clean run of five keys in the listed order. A wrong symbol breaks the sequence, so reset and start that melody again from its first key.

Defeat Death in the Transept

Head to the upper chamber, the Transept. A cutscene plays as Rose finds Leon Belmont chained to a golden cross, and Death appears before the fight begins. Beating Death clears the final step.

When Death falls, a glowing orb drops. Pick it up to absorb The Shadow into Rose’s tarot deck.

What The Shadow Arcana gives you

The Shadow is the card of Death. Absorbing it unlocks a spell and a traversal skill at the same time.

SpellSoul Harvest, 60 MP
SkillDouble Jump

Soul Harvest releases a slow but heavy scythe attack. Any enemy killed by it spawns four sickles that scatter outward. Double Jump lets Rose press jump again in mid-air for a second jump, which opens up routes she could not reach before.

How to confirm you got it

You will know the run worked when the “Death… killed?” trophy pops right after the fight. The orb then appears as a drop, and The Shadow shows up as an equippable card in your Tarot menu with Soul Harvest ready to assign and Double Jump added to Rose’s moveset.
