Oswald Anders, the Blacksmith at your base, hands out a side quest to recover an equipment chest that went missing. He doesn’t actually want it back, so whatever is inside is yours to keep once you find it. The catch is that the chest is buried at a camp well to the west, and the game only marks it after you squeeze the location out of the person who took it.

Quick answer: Start the quest from the Blacksmith, ask Cade Hawthorn (the Carpenter) about the lost chest to reveal the Carpentry Camp in Revelwood, then dig up the rubble pile beside the tent with a pickaxe.
What you need before starting
The quest unlocks after you finish Carpentry Assistance, which is the quest that brings Cade Hawthorn the Carpenter to your base. You also need the right travel tools and a digging tool, because the chest sits far from the starting region and is physically buried.
- Carpentry Assistance completed, so the Carpenter is at your base
- A Glider and Grappling Hook to cross the distance to Revelwood
- Any pickaxe, such as the Scrappy Pickaxe, to clear the rubble

Go to Oswald Anders at your base and open his dialogue. Choose the Equipment Lost option to pick up the quest Oswald Anders’ Chest. The first objective simply tells you that one of the survivors took his chest and that you need to ask around.

Walk over to Cade Hawthorn, the Carpenter, and talk to him. Pick the Equipment Lost line here too. He admits he borrowed the chest to finish some old projects, asks you to keep quiet, and offers to tell you where it ended up in exchange for your silence.

Once he finishes talking, you get a “New location charted” message and the objective switches to Find The Lost Equipment Chest at the Carpentry Camp.
Travel to the Carpentry Camp in Revelwood
The Carpentry Camp sits in the far west of Embervale, in Revelwood, southwest of the Ancient Spire Revelwood fast travel point. The fastest route is to fast travel to the nearest Ancient Spire and glide down toward the marker. If you have already opened up Pike’s Port, you can instead head there and move southwest to reach the camp.

The camp is small, with a tent, some beds, boxes and a regular chest. Don’t mistake that ordinary chest for your target. The one you want is hidden underground.
Dig up the chest
The objective’s instruction to “unearth” the chest is literal: search for a mound of dark soil mixed with gray rocky debris. It lies on the ground to the tent’s right and the wooden handcart’s left.
Equip a pickaxe and mine the rubble away until the buried chest appears. The chest is bright gold, so once it starts showing through the dirt it is hard to miss. Keep clearing the whole mound if it isn’t visible yet.

Open the chest to claim its contents. You’ll see the Quest Completed notification for Oswald Anders’ Chest, which confirms the quest is done. The chest also drops a handful of materials such as Bonemeal, Antidote, Resin, Revelwood Stone and Rubble alongside its main reward.
What’s inside the chest
The main reward is randomized, so two players can open the same chest and walk away with different gear. Some pulls give a weapon like the one-handed sword Wolf’s Maw, others give armor such as Wizard Pants or Wizard Boots, and some give jewelry like the Ring of Mana. Whatever drops, opening the chest is what completes the quest.
Here are the stats for two of the items that can turn up, so you know what you’re looking at if either lands in your inventory.
| Item | Type | Rarity | Key stats |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-Handed Sword (Warrior) | Common | Cutting damage, 0.6s attack speed | |
| Legs armor (Mage) | Rare | Mana Regeneration 8, Health 40 |
Wolf’s Maw carries Critical Strike Chance 4 percent, Critical Strike Damage 14 percent and Merciless Attack Damage 14 percent, and it scales across item levels 1 to 55. Wizard Pants add the Unity 1 and Eternal Spark 1 perks on top of their mana and health bonuses, making them a solid early option for a spellcaster.
Because the drop is random, there is no way to reroll it for a better item. Take whatever the chest gives, since the quest reward is the same regardless and any pull from it is useful early on.
