Enshrouded: How to Fix Low Health With Food, Cooking, and Berries

After a few deaths and fights on the Plains, your health bar sits partly empty. The green portion ends well short of the end, and the rest is a dark red stub that will not fill back up just by standing around. If you respawned hungry, the game even tells you so with a “You are hungry.” prompt. Health in this early stretch around Longkeep is tied to what you eat, not to waiting.

Quick answer: Eating cooked Grilled Lean Meat increases your health cap, while Purple Berries replenish the bar’s green section gradually. You can gather both at no cost near the first Flame Altar.

Collect the free cooked food at Longkeep

Everything you need is in the ruined Longkeep camp, part of the early Plains run you make after the Cinder Vault escape to the Plains. Head to the camp building west of the first Flame Altar spot. On its east side, drop off the boardwalk to reach the lower floor, where a campfire, a cot, and loose food are waiting.

Hold E to trigger the “Collect nearby loot” prompt. That single action picks up Grilled Lean Meat, which also throws up the banner “NEW HINT FOUND – Cooked Foods And Dishes: Springlands”, along with a Grilled Penny Bun.

There is also a barrel nearby. Open it with “E Open” and grab the contents with “F Take All” to pull out Wooden Arrow x11 and a red flask item x2.

Read the note and take the raw meat behind the cot

Next to the cot is a lore note called “A Good Night’s Rest”. Use “E Read” to open it. The writer mentions rations hidden behind the bed that “will make for a nice meal when cooked over fire”.

Go behind the cot and pick up the Raw Lean Meat. The pickup also unlocks a recipe, shown as “RECIPE UNLOCKED! Raw Meat and Corncob Skewer (+2 more)”. This raw meat is the piece you will cook next.

Cook the raw meat at the campfire

Walk up to the campfire in the same building and use “E Cook”. A hint at the fire reads “Interact with campfires to cook food or sit near them with [X] to become Rested in the wilds.”

The first time, a tutorial card appears that says “Place food in your action bar, select it, and press [LMB] to cook.” Follow it exactly.

Select the Raw Lean Meat on your action bar. It shows the label “Raw Lean Meat – Hold to cook”. Hold the left mouse button. The raw meat is used up and a cooked piece drops onto the bar in its place.

Eat from the action bar to raise maximum health

Eat consumables using the action bar: press the number key assigned to the food slot. After eating Grilled Lean Meat, the message “Maximum health increased.” appears and the health bar visibly extends. Grilled Lean Meat raises your maximum health; Purple Berries replenish health over time.

Eating a Grilled Penny Bun does something different. It shows “Magic Damage bonus.” rather than extending health, so treat the two foods as separate effects rather than interchangeable.

Harvest Purple Berries to regenerate the green bar

Berries are the food that refills the green part over time. Head to the grass south of the first Flame Altar meadow, east of the slope down from the mine exit. A hint there reads “Harvest and eat berries to replenish your health over time. It will prepare you for the dangers ahead!”

Aim at a berry bush and use “E Harvest”. Each bush gives Purple Berries x2, so three bushes net you six berries.

Each Purple Berry bush yields two berries per harvest.

Eat a Purple Berry from the hotbar and the game reports “Health regeneration is active.” The green part of the bar then grows back over the next few seconds. That message and the refilling bar are how you know it worked. For more places to look for food, use the interactive Enshrouded map.

Check active food effects on the Status screen

To see what is currently working, open the Character tab with N and choose “Status details…”. Under FOOD EFFECTS, each slot holds one food type at a time.

TypeFoodEffect
FruitPurple Berries+6 Health Regeneration
MushroomGrilled Penny Bun+6% Magic Damage
MeatGrilled Lean Meat+40 Health

The Purple Berries effect runs on a short timer, with only a small amount of time left when first opened, while the Grilled Penny Bun and Grilled Lean Meat effects sit on much longer timers. You can hold three different food types at once. An empty box reads “Available slot for food types that aren’t already being digested.” Eating a second food of a type you are already digesting does not open a new slot.

The STATUS screen lists one slot per food type, with each active effect and its timer.

The same screen also tracks RESTED, which raises your Stamina Maximum and Regeneration under conditions like No threats nearby, Comfortable, Warmth, and Sheltered-Sitting-Sleeping. Watch the DEBUFFS line too, where “Exposed: -6 Stamina Regeneration, -10 Stamina. You’re exposed and feel cold. Equip clothing to protect yourself.” tells you to put on clothing if you are feeling the cold.
