WoW Classic Guide: How to Unlearn a Profession

World of Warcraft Classic lets each character hold only two primary professions at a time. If you want something new, like swapping Enchanting for Engineering or giving up Herbalism for Mining, you first have to drop one of the old ones. You do that entirely from your own character window. You don’t need to visit a trainer, and dropping a profession costs no gold.

Quick answer: Press K, click the primary profession under Professions, click the red “no” icon labeled “Unlearn this profession,” then click Unlearn in the confirmation box.

Unlearn a profession from the WoW Classic Skills tab

Open the Skills menu with the default hotkey K. You can also press C to open Character Info and then click the Skills tab at the bottom of that window.

Find the Professions heading and click the primary profession you want to remove. Your two primary professions appear here with their skill values, for example “Tailoring 41/75” or “Enchanting 2/75.” Selecting the row brings up the profession’s description in the lower half of the window.
Look for the small red-and-yellow circular “no” icon to the right of the profession description, next to the skill bar. Hover over it to check that the tooltip reads “Unlearn this profession,” then click it.

Read the confirmation box that pops up. It names the exact profession, such as “Do you want to unlearn Enchanting?” Click Unlearn to go ahead, or click Cancel if you picked the wrong row.

If you don’t see the red icon, you probably haven’t selected a profession yet. The button only shows up after you click the profession’s bar in the Skills list.

The same Skills tab method works in Season of Discovery, The Burning Crusade Classic, and Wrath of the Lich King Classic.

How to confirm the profession is gone

The change takes effect right away. Your chat log prints a line for the profession and one for each ability tied to it. Unlearning Apprentice Enchanting, for example, produces these two messages:

  • “You have unlearned Enchanting (Apprentice).”
  • “You have unlearned Disenchant.”

The profession also disappears from the Professions heading in the Skills menu, which leaves an empty primary slot. You can now train a new profession at any matching trainer. If you need to clear both slots, repeat the same steps for the second profession.

What unlearning wipes in WoW Classic

Unlearning is free, but it is permanent. Classic has no system that restores your old progress. Once you click Unlearn, you lose the following:

  • Your skill level in that profession, which resets to 1 if you ever retrain it
  • Every recipe you learned, including ones from trainers, drops, and vendors
  • Every rank you trained, from Apprentice up to Artisan
  • Abilities tied to the profession, such as Disenchant for Enchanting

Here is what each rank covers. Any of these ranks you give up has to be trained again in order, from the beginning:

RankSkill cap
Apprentice75
Journeyman150
Expert225
Artisan300

This also applies if you return to a profession you dropped earlier. A character who unlearns 150 Herbalism and later trains it again starts over at 1, just like any brand-new profession.

Which WoW Classic professions take up a slot

Only primary professions use up the two-profession allowance, so those are the only ones you may need to drop. Classic has nine primary professions in all. Six involve crafting: Alchemy and Blacksmithing, plus Enchanting, Engineering, Leatherworking, and Tailoring. The other three are for gathering: Herbalism and Mining, plus Skinning.

Cooking, Fishing, and First Aid are secondary skills. They appear under a separate Secondary Skills heading, and a character can know all three alongside both primary professions. You never need to drop one of them to make room for something else. Once the confirmation message shows up in chat and the Professions list has an open slot, you’re ready to train your replacement.
