Mads Mikkelsen plays Archer, the villain of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s campaign. Before launch, Activision described him only as a “dangerous enemy” waiting on an unknown weapon of war. In the game itself, Archer is a Russian Defense Minister working with the Konni Group. He engineers a coup in North Korea and buys a weapon from a cartel. He also turns out to be the father of Vladimir Makarov. Everything below covers the full campaign, ending included, so stop here if you haven’t finished it.

Quick answer: Archer is Makarov’s father and a Russian Defense Minister. He backs Ri Ju-Young’s coup, captures Task Force 141, and dies when Price stabs him through the throat on a frozen lake.

Who Archer is in Modern Warfare 4

The marketing kept Archer’s identity hidden. The campaign gives it away quickly. North Korean officials call him “Defense Minister” in his first scene. His guards are Konni soldiers. His goals reach well past the Korean Peninsula.

  • Role: Russian Defense Minister allied with the Konni Group
  • Family tie: father of Vladimir Makarov, which gives him a personal grudge against Price
  • North Korean ally: Ri Ju-Young, the military commander and sister of Leader Ri Seung-ho
  • Weapon: a dual-cylinder canister bought from cartel leader Valeria
  • Goal: a “new Russian Empire,” starting with South Korea as a proving ground
  • Fate: killed by Price in the mission GREATER GOOD

Archer’s scenes in story order

Archer appears in nine story moments, a mix of cutscenes and scripted gameplay. Together they run a little over 20 minutes. Some of them come from missions where you play as Price or Ri Seung-ho, not from standalone cinematics.

Pyongyang: the pitch and the coup

Archer’s first scene is diplomatic. He walks into an ornate hall, offers condolences for Seung-ho’s late father, and proposes a preemptive strike to reunite the peninsula with Russian backing. He boasts that Russia will soon control the Middle East. He offers to cripple South Korea the same way Venezuela was neutralized. Ri Ju-Young says their father wanted this. Seung-ho refuses to start a war while his people are still mourning, and he asks for time to think.

Seung-ho warns Comrade Ko Jin-hyuk that the Russian is pushing for war and turning his sister against him. Events soon give him little time to respond. In a subsequent scene labeled “1 DAY BEFORE INVASION,” guards shove Seung-ho onto his office floor. Archer enters with Ri Ju-Young, who announces her intention to take power and ready the invasion before shooting her brother. Archer passes her the canister weapon. Players can control the lead-up: Seung-ho races through palace hallways with bodyguards Shin and Jang, until soldiers ambush the group.

The helipad deal with Valeria

On a skyscraper helipad at sunset, Valeria trades Archer the canister for a flash drive. Archer complains that she “shut down half the city” getting there. She hands over Price and what’s left of Task Force 141. Archer orders them loaded up, says he knows a scorpion when he sees one, and shoots her. The canister carries the warning label “DO NOT TARGET AREA” and the code “PROT-00122.”

Task Force 141 in Archer’s custody

Price, Ghost, and Gaz wake up tied to chairs in a dark cell, still arguing about where to draw the line. Archer walks in, mocks Gaz’s idealism, and tells them no rescue is coming. He reveals that they will be blamed for assassinating the Supreme Leader of North Korea. Then he shoots Gaz in the head and orders the other two separated.

In Escape, Price battles his way out and rescues Ghost. The two make it to a garage, where Price operates the controls to help Ghost escape in a truck. Konni soldiers seize Price as he does so. Archer looms over him beneath the red emergency lights and says: “Vladimir Makarov was a patriot… and he was my son.” He vows that Price will see everyone he loves die.

Archer’s plan for a new Russian Empire

Archer explains his plan in the back of a military truck on a snowy mountain road, sitting across from a bound Price. The Korean invasion is a test run. South Korea serves as the proving ground. After that come Ukraine, Poland, England, and the rest of Europe, all part of rebuilding Russia’s empire. He also talks to Price about the cycle of war. He clearly expects Price to understand him better than Price would like.

How Archer dies in GREATER GOOD

The convoy scene leads straight into the mission GREATER GOOD. The truck is hit. Price disarms a guard and fights Archer as the vehicle rolls over. Price crawls out of the wreckage and cuts his zip ties with a shard of glass. He picks up a Kastov 545 rifle and chases Archer through foggy woods under the objective “Kill the Archer.” Along the way he hears memories of Gaz talking about where to draw the line.

The chase ends on a cracked frozen lake. Price tackles Archer, and the fight plays out as an interactive struggle with L2, R2, and TAKEDOWN prompts. Price drives a blade through Archer’s throat. Both men are left bleeding on the ice. Ghost arrives with his rifle raised and kneels beside Price. Price tells him “Gaz was right… Hold the line,” and then dies. Ghost closes Price’s eyes, picks up the weapon bag, and walks off across the lake. Finishing the mission unlocks the Hold the Line trophy.

Mads Mikkelsen’s casting and campaign access

Mikkelsen was revealed as the antagonist in the campaign trailer shown during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast. Archer is his second major video game role, after Clifford Unger in Death Stranding. He also provides the character’s likeness, not just the voice.

Players who digitally pre-ordered the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition could access the campaign starting October 16. As a result, Archer’s complete story is already making the rounds. The game arrives in full on October 23, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The weapon Ghost takes from the lake remains in play through the credits, hinting that Archer’s scheme could survive him.
