Greater Good is the mission that ends Modern Warfare 4’s campaign, and it does not end well for Captain John Price. It is set in the “Current Day,” you play it as Price, and it runs about eight minutes from a prisoner transport in a blizzard to the in-memoriam cards. Major spoilers follow.
Quick answer: Price escapes a crashed Konni convoy, chases the Archer to a frozen lake, and kills him with his own knife. Price then dies, and the “Hold the line” achievement unlocks as the credits begin.
Greater Good setup: Price as the Archer’s prisoner
Greater Good begins once Price’s escape attempt from the Archer’s prison in Escape is over. A convoy of military trucks makes its way slowly over a snowy mountain road. Price, bloodied and bound, rides in one truck with Konni soldiers and the Archer.

The Archer, played by Mads Mikkelsen, does most of the talking. He treats Korea as a “proving ground” and points out that six rounds did that damage, then asks Price to imagine six thousand. His list of targets runs from Ukraine to Poland to the rest of Europe and England. He threatens Price’s family in the south of England and Kate Laswell at the CIA. His stated goal is a “new Russian Empire.”
Price answers by calling it all a cycle that keeps repeating, and he tells the Archer they both know how this ends for him. The Archer rejects that. To him there is no cycle, only a straight line forward. The exchange sets up the rest of the mission, which is essentially Price proving his version right.

Add to Google Preferences →Greater Good mission structure and prompts
The playable part is short and linear. It’s one chase broken into a few beats, each with a single on-screen prompt or objective.
| Phase | Setting | Key prompt or objective |
|---|---|---|
| Ambush and crash | Mountain road | Cutscene |
| Escape the wreck | Crash site | CUT BINDINGS [V] |
| Firefight at the truck | Crash site | Kastov 762 pickup |
| Chase | Snowy forest | Kill The Archer, MOUNT [Z] |
| Descent | Ravine and frozen river | Slide sequence |
| Confrontation | Frozen lake | TAKEDOWN [F] |
The key prompts shown above are the PC defaults. A “CHECKPOINT REACHED” banner appears right after Price arms himself, so a failed chase doesn’t send you back to the convoy cutscene.
The convoy ambush and Price’s escape
An explosion hits the truck mid-conversation and the mission title card appears. Price fights a soldier for a pistol as the vehicle tips and rolls down the slope. When he comes to in the snow, the Konni guards are already pulling back. Their radio chatter confirms they have the Defense Minister and the weapon secured, and they fall back toward the forest under sniper fire.

Ghost is the one behind the sniper fire, and he shouts at Price to grab a weapon. Price is still tied up, so the first interaction is cutting his wrist restraints on a jagged piece of torn metal. He then picks up a Kastov 762 and clears the guards still standing around the burning truck. Ghost calls out that the Archer is heading east into the woods.

Kill The Archer: The forest chase and its fail state
Once the objective “Kill The Archer” appears, a yellow marker and distance counter track him through the trees. Konni patrols are spread through the forest, and the MOUNT prompt shows up on tree trunks and cover, which helps against the snipers covering the retreat. Price is already hurt, so the red “YOU ARE HURT, GET TO COVER!” overlay shows up fast if you trade shots in the open.

The chase is timed in practice, even though there’s no clock on screen. Falling too far behind the Archer ends the attempt with a “TRY AGAIN” screen and the message “YOU FAILED TO KEEP UP WITH THE ARCHER.” Stopping to clear every patrol is what usually triggers it.
Treat the Konni patrols as obstacles, not targets. Shoot what blocks the path and keep the marker moving closer.
The frozen lake ending and the Gaz flashback
The forest gives way to a sharp drop covered in snow. Price slides down, tumbles into an icy ravine, then scrapes across a frozen river. As he slides, an audio flashback plays an earlier dispute with Kyle “Gaz” Garrick. Gaz argues they should stop fighting with their hands tied. Price says that fighting without restraint leaves blood on your hands, that the boundary can be set wherever necessary, and that somebody must make the enemy fear the dark.

The river opens onto a frozen lake where the Archer is running across the ice. Reaching him brings up the TAKEDOWN prompt, and the rest is a scripted brawl driven by button prompts. Price beats him down, wrestles the Archer’s combat knife away, and drives it through his neck. The Archer’s last line is that Price dies here with him, by his side, and he’s right.
Bleeding on the ice beside the body, Price is found by Ghost, who asks how serious the wound is and then if the cost was worth it. Price’s last words are “Gaz was right. Hold the line.” Ghost shuts Price’s eyes, says it’s good to see him again, lifts a green military duffel bag off the ice, and disappears into the fog.
Hold the line achievement, in memoriam cards and the post-credits scene
Finishing Greater Good unlocks the Hold the line achievement. The “ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED” banner appears the moment the screen cuts to black after Ghost leaves, so that notification is your confirmation the mission and the campaign are complete. The game then shows “IN MEMORIAM” cards for four people:
- Reiner Yang
- Matt Canale
- Preetam Raj Bordoloi
- Vince Zampella
Full Infinity Ward production credits follow, and it’s worth sitting through them. After the credits, Kate Laswell logs into a laptop in a desert room and confirms “PERMANENTLY DELETE THIS RECORD?” on the files for Gaz, Ghost and Price. She then tells a colleague she has recommended her for the Watcher Program.
Modern Warfare 4 is in early access now, with the full release on October 23rd, 2026. Greater Good is the campaign’s shortest stretch of real gameplay, but it carries most of the story’s weight: the Archer is dead, Price is gone, and Task Force 141’s records have been wiped.
