Over the Hill starts you with a single tool slot, and you feel it the first time you get stuck. The slot usually goes to the winch. That leaves no room for planks, a jack, or anything else that might get you past a gap or flip a rolled truck back over. If the tool you need isn’t equipped, the only fix is to drive back to the mechanic and swap. Adding slots is how you avoid that trip, and you can do it early.
Quick answer: Visit Crazy Günther, open his upgrade menu, and buy Tool Slots upgrades for 25, 50, and 75 Pebbles. That takes you from one slot to the maximum of four.

Tool Slots upgrade costs
Tool Slots is one of seven upgrade types the mechanic sells. It is one of only two types with three stages. The winch is the other. Prices rise with each stage, and you have to buy them in order.
| Stage | Cost | Tool slots after purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Starting setup | Free | 1 |
| Stage 1 | 25 Pebbles | 2 |
| Stage 2 | 50 Pebbles | 3 |
| Stage 3 | 75 Pebbles | 4 (max) |
Buying every stage costs 150 Pebbles. Four slots is the cap. Once you buy the third stage, there is nothing left to purchase for inventory.
Upgrades are bought for one vehicle at a time. If you switch to a different vehicle, its tool slots start from that vehicle’s own upgrade level. Your purchases on the first vehicle do not carry over.

Crazy Günther is the game’s mechanic. He becomes available shortly after you finish the tutorial, so the inventory upgrade is open almost right away.

Earning Pebbles for inventory upgrades
Pebbles are the currency for every upgrade. If you can’t afford the next stage, these activities pay out:
- Completing Challenge Trails
- Finishing Recoveries
- Discovering Points of Interest
- Extracting meteorites
Pebbles are shared across all upgrade types, so you’re always choosing between them. The second tool slot costs only 25 Pebbles. It is one of the cheapest buys in the menu, and it doubles what you can carry. That makes it an easy first purchase before you put money into the engine.

What extra tool slots hold
Each slot holds one tool. Your loadout decides which problems you can solve in the field without driving back to the mechanic. These are the tools that compete for space:
| Tool | What it handles |
|---|---|
| Winch | Pulling free using a nearby tree |
| Portable winch point | Anchoring when no tree is close |
| Planks | Gaps and rough surfaces |
| Jack | Righting a rolled vehicle |
| Repair Kit | Damage far from a cabin |
| Bell | Clearing bad weather |
| Camp | Advancing time away from a cabin |
| Meteorite Radar | Starting a meteorite search |
With all four slots, it works best to cover different failure cases rather than double up. A good spread is something to pull you out, something to recover from a rollover, something for terrain your tires can’t grip, and something for damage or weather. That covers most of the ways a trip goes wrong far from a cabin.
