Once Human: How to Get Potato

Where wild potatoes grow, how to mark them on the map, and how to grow your own supply at base.

Where wild potatoes grow, how to mark them on the map, and how to grow your own supply at base.

Harvesting First Potato

Potatoes in Once Human grow wild across the early-game regions, and the game will show you exactly where they are if you ask it. The tuber is a basic food that restores Energy on its own and goes into a long list of cooked dishes, from Roasted Potato to Fish & Chips. You don’t need seeds, a vendor, or a quest to start collecting them.

Quick answer: Open the map, go to Resource Tracking, pick Potato under Crops, then travel to a green circle such as Meyer’s Market in Broken Delta. Press [F] on the small white-flowered plants.

Track potato spawns with Resource Tracking

The fastest way to find potatoes is the map’s built-in tracker. It marks every area where the crop spawns, so you never have to guess.

Press M to open the world map. The Map tab opens by default.
Select Resource Tracking from the menu on the left. This opens three categories: Ores, Crops, and Animals.
Open the Crops dropdown. It lists every wild plant the tracker can mark.
Click Potato. Green circles appear on the map wherever potato plants are concentrated.

Go to any green zone, then search the ground around tents, buildings, and grassy areas for the plants.

Hovering over Potato in your inventory shows a “Go to Resource Tracking” prompt, which jumps straight to the tracker if you’re already looking at the item.

Potato locations in Broken Delta and Dayton Wetlands

Several spots near the starting zones have reliable potato patches. All of them are reachable from the beginning of the game.

Meyer’s Market is the densest of the four. Potato plants cluster around the tents and pallets just outside the market, more grow among the riverside campsites, and another run of them lines the grassy shoulder of the paved road past the settlement’s exit gate. Citrus County also has plenty of corn mixed in with the potatoes, and Tall Grass Inn is worth a stop because beets and cabbage grow in the same spot.

How to spot and harvest a wild potato plant

Wild potatoes are low green shrubs topped with small white flowers. They sit close to the ground and are easy to miss in tall grass, especially at night, so a flashlight helps. A scoped weapon is handy for picking out the next plant across a camp before you run to it.

Walk up to a plant until the [F] Potato prompt appears, then press F to gather it.

You’ll know it worked when notifications on the side of the screen show Potato +1, along with Starchrom +1 and Battle Pass Exp +1. Every plant you harvest feeds a little progress into the Battle Pass, which makes a Meyer’s Market loop slightly more worthwhile than it looks.

Some plants in the wild glow with a purple and pink aura. Those are Deviated versions, and harvesting one gives a Deviated Potato, the ingredient for French Fries, rather than the regular kind.

Potatoes spoil. A fresh one lasts about 4 hours of durability in your backpack, so cook or refrigerate them rather than hoarding a full stack of 100.

Growing potatoes at your base

Once you have Potato Seeds, you can stop making trips to the map’s green circles. Potatoes grow under these conditions:

  • Soil: Loamy Soil or a Planter Box
  • Growth time: 6 hours to mature
  • Irrigation level: between 50 and 90
  • Light level: between 70 and 100

Planted crops can also turn Deviated at random, which is the only reliable way to keep French Fries on the menu. There’s a hands-off option too. A Fetch-A-Lot Bunny placed inside an Isolated Securement Unit in your territory gathers Potatoes and Potato Seeds at random, so a single Deviation can keep a slow trickle coming in while you’re out doing anything else.
