Coral Island is finally getting a Nintendo version, but not on the console Kickstarter backers were promised in 2021. Stairway Games and publisher Balor Games confirmed during The MIX Fall Showcase that the farming sim is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 this winter. It launches alongside Update 1.4, “Kids Grow Up,” which lets your children age past the crib for the first time. The original Switch port is cancelled.
Quick answer: Coral Island and Update 1.4 arrive together on Switch 2 in winter 2026. The update is free on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. No exact release date is confirmed yet.
Coral Island Switch 2 version: multiplayer and cross-play
The Switch 2 release is the full game. That means farming, raising animals, building relationships in Starlet Town, and diving down to the Merfolk Kingdom. You can play solo or with up to four players online. Cross-play also works with friends on other supported platforms. Stairway hasn’t said which platforms count as “supported,” and it hasn’t said whether you can move a save from PC or console to Switch 2. Expect it to be a digital release.
Coral Island entered PC Early Access on October 11th, 2022. Its full 1.0 release came to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on November 14th, 2023. Switch 2 will be the game’s fourth platform. Since no Nintendo edition came before it, there is no existing Switch version to upgrade.
Kids Grow Up: how children age in Update 1.4
Right now, having a baby in Coral Island is a fairly static affair. Once you reach 15 hearts with your spouse and own the Level 4 farmhouse upgrade, you can ask to expand the family. The baby arrives 14 in-game days later and stays swaddled in a nursery crib. You can have up to two children. Update 1.4 lets those children grow up through four stages.
| Stage | What changes |
|---|---|
| Baby | Today’s crib stage |
| Toddler | First new stage |
| School-age | Same age as town kids like Zoe |
| Teenager | Personality shaped by hobbies |
Each stage adds its own milestones, cutscenes, and interactions. Stairway hasn’t said how many in-game days each stage lasts.

Hobbies that shape your teenagers
As children grow, they pick up interests of their own. You can encourage them, and what they get into carries over into who they are as teenagers. A hobby affects their personality, their daily schedule, and what they talk about. Four hobbies are confirmed so far:
- Music
- Sports
- Baking
- Gaming
Spouses as parents
Your partner gets new material too. Spouses get fresh dialogue and family cutscenes that show them parenting alongside you. They can also ask you out on dates after you’re married, which gives the relationship something to do once the wedding is over.

Tedak Siten milestone cutscene
A new cutscene is based on Tedak Siten, a Javanese ceremony that celebrates a baby’s first steps onto the ground. Many of Stairway’s developers grew up with the tradition. It fits a game that already draws heavily on Indonesian culture, and it marks one of the earliest milestones in a child’s life.
Starlet Town’s kids grow up too
Your own children aren’t the only ones getting older. Town kids like Archie and Zoe also become teenagers, with new storylines and dialogue to match. Teenage Archie, for example, talks about an art project for school.

Other Update 1.4 changes: cooking, bobbers, and rumble
The Cooking Table has a redesigned interface. You can now filter recipes by the stat buffs they give, or by which villagers like a dish as a gift. That makes it much faster to find the right meal for a long day of mining or a birthday present.

Fishing now features decorative bobbers that drift and bob on the water as you wait for a bite. They have no gameplay effect. Reach Fishing Mastery to unlock them, then purchase the designs at the Beach Shack. Twelve designs have been revealed so far, including a strawberry, a mushroom, and a sailboat. If you’ve neglected fishing, you’ll need to raise its level to get them.
Controller vibration also arrives on every platform.
| Platform | Vibration support |
|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | HD Rumble |
| PlayStation 5 | DualSense haptic feedback |
| Xbox Series X|S | Xbox Wireless Controller vibration |
| Xbox PC | Xbox Wireless Controller vibration |
| Steam Deck | Haptic feedback |
| Steam PC | Xbox controller vibration, DualSense haptics |
Rounding out the update are better lighting across places like the general store, the aquarium, and the underwater town, plus a batch of quality-of-life fixes. Stairway plans to publish the full patch notes on launch day.
Original Nintendo Switch version cancelled: backer options
The Switch port was in trouble long before this. In 2024, publisher layoffs left it uncertain, and now it’s officially dead. Stairway says strict platform and performance limits on the original hardware made it unworkable. Backers who pledged for a Switch copy can get a free Switch 2 key, or choose a key for Steam, PS5, or Xbox Series X|S instead.
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| October 16th, 2026 | BackerKit survey sent to Switch backers |
| November 5th, 2026 | Deadline to confirm a new platform |
| After November 5th | Unconfirmed backers receive a Steam key |
The platform you choose in the survey also applies to any extra copies you bought as add-ons. If you want add-on copies on a different platform, email [email protected] by November 5th, 2026, and the team will handle it manually.
Stairway is purchasing console keys separately for each backer, so changing platforms might not be possible after a key has been ordered. Confirm your choice before submitting the survey.
Coral Island Switch 2 release date
For now, the only confirmed window is winter 2026. Stairway says it will announce an exact date closer to launch. The Switch 2 version and Update 1.4 will go live together, and the update will be free for anyone who already owns the game on Steam, PS5, or Xbox Series X|S. A full breakdown of both will follow on launch day. Until then, the date to circle is November 5th, the deadline for Switch backers.
