Two full raids, one failed and one extracted, show how Hajin’s operations, loot, bosses and progression fit together.

DMZ in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 sends squads into Hajin, a radioactive stretch of borderland where North Korea, South Korea and Russia meet. Each match follows the same loop. You fight AI soldiers and other players, take whatever is worth money, and reach a helicopter before the radiation closes in. Recent sessions show the whole cycle: a scripted solo prologue, a base hub, one raid that ends in a squad wipe, and another that ends with an A rating and a full pocket of intel.

Quick answer: In Hajin, DMZ is Modern Warfare 4’s PvPvE extraction experience, accommodating up to 60 players. Digital pre-order owners have been able to play early since October 20; the complete game arrives October 23.

DMZ rules in Modern Warfare 4

Activision bills the mode as “the action extraction shooter,” and its trailer reduces it to three words: fight, loot, extract. The earlier DMZ was free to play. This version is not. You need to own Modern Warfare 4 to play it, and there is no offline or PvE-only server option.

Every point of interest has a Threat Level from 1 to 5, and that level decides how many AI soldiers show up and how well armored they are. The enemy roster scales from Tier 1 North Korean grunts to Tier 4 faceless armored soldiers. It also includes combat drone swarms, LMG drones, K9 robotic quadrupeds that usually guard underground areas, helicopter patrols and road convoys. A stealth meter on the HUD shows how close you are to being spotted. Quiet kills stop enemies from calling in reinforcements.

Each operator you kill adds a bounty to your dog tag. Reach four operator kills and you become Wanted, making your approximate position visible to everyone on the TacMap. Your bounty ends if you die or use cash to clear it at a Bounty Station. A weekly leaderboard ranks the 50 Most Wanted players and the 50 leading Bounty Hunters.

Hajin: the DMZ map and its exclusion zone

Hajin is a fictional contested zone that follows the events of the MW4 campaign. A briefing that plays after the prologue lays out the setup. A nuclear meltdown emptied the region, and rogue factions and experimental weapons-of-mass-destruction programs moved in. The radiation that squeezes every match is a direct result of that meltdown.

The tactical map features 13 major points of interest: 14th Political Prison, Chang-San Air Base, Deadtown, Imjin Farmland, Cheongun Village, Mirae General Hospital, Cheonwang Peak Array, Haneul Nuclear Reactor, Nuri-So Mall, The Grid, Songdo Wharf, Wolves Stadium and Hajin River Heights. Smaller areas between these locations can be just as important on a raid. They are Hanrie Village, Tong-Il Village, Imjin Suburb, Revolution Dam, Mujin Pass, Hajin Riverside, South Island, the Russian Border Crossing, the South Korean Border Zone, Minsok Art School and the Netshin Tech Complex. Fortified compounds, including Compound Alpha, Charlie and Echo, are assigned threat ratings. Compound Charlie has a Medium Threat rating.

The map also has smaller locations: clinics, fire and police stations, gas stations, SAM sites, UAV towers, ammo and armor caches, and Bounty Stations. Weather changes during a match. Fog, heavy rain and snow that builds up on the ground all change how far you can see. When a player dies, vultures circle low over the body, which tells everyone nearby that a fight has happened there.

Breaking New Ground, the DMZ prologue mission

Before you get access to the base, DMZ opens with a single-player mission called Breaking New Ground. A lone operator, call sign Falcon 4-3, and a combat dog named Rex make a HALO jump from a cargo plane into the North Korean side of Hajin. Their job is to recover the black box from a downed ISR drone. CIA handler Watcher-2 guides them over the radio.

After landing, the opening objective is to follow Rex through the North Korean Wilderness to the drone crash site. Shown at 01:31 in Rubhen925’s video. Image: Infinity Ward

The mission works as a short tutorial for the mode’s survival systems. When the operator reaches the crash, the black box is gone. A sniper then wounds both the operator and Rex. That forces you to use a tourniquet, carry the dog into cover, and search Deadtown for a Medkit. From there the operator sneaks through a flooded drainage canal, where a looted dog tag names a victim, Rim Jong-gil. The canal leads into an underground re-education facility. Using a silenced Sang 9mm, the operator clears the rooms and uploads the black box data to an enemy terminal while alarms go off.

The mission is built so you cannot win it. At the exit door, an armored soldier in an MP-0 vest knocks the operator out. Enemy commander Blix then searches him for someone named Ko Jin-Hyuk and executes him, and the extraction is aborted. Blix later appears as a recruitable operator, which is a strange twist given that scene.

The prologue also introduces item prices, shown in won. In-match loot values on the after-action screen are shown in dollars.

FOB Zulu, operators and deployment options

Between raids you are at Forward Operating Base Zulu, a hub you walk around in. You cannot enter the DMZ until you recruit an operator. The roster includes Min-Hee, CTSFO, Ghost, Blix, Valeria, Price, Dallas, Luca, Kal, Coffey, Park, Reece, Oh-Ji, SAS, KSK variants, Hunter Killer, Army SF Airborne and UCTF. There are up to three active-duty slots. Vault Edition owners get all three right away.

The base has a set of stations:

  • Stash: shared storage for 40 items and 12 weapons, plus cash and crafting materials.
  • Survival kit locker: deployment kits. The Vault Edition kit adds insurance contracts, rescue beacons, Fulton Drop Markers, Medium Backpacks and 2-plate carriers.
  • Firing range: an outdoor range used to test weapons and complete the Crackshot order.
  • 3D Printer: a crafting bench that unlocks at DMZ Level 2.
  • Vendor and Gunsmith: a rotating shop and a cash-based weapon builder.
  • Boss Board, DMZ Orders and Events: Lieutenant tracking, longer-term challenges and limited-time events.

The deployment map offers three match types. Story Missions are fixed narrative operations that reward recipes, intel and gear. Dynamic Operations are generated for each match, and you can also start them in the field from payphones. Free Roam has no assigned objective at all. How you get into the map is a separate choice, and it costs money:

Polaris Dagor$5,000
LTV$25,000
Helicopter$50,000
Plane$100,000

What a DMZ raid looks like in practice

Two three-player raids show how much can happen in one match, and how differently a match can end.

Operation Ignition Point (Dynamic Operation)

A squad playing as Ghost gets off a transport helicopter in the South Korean Wilderness. The task is to find an explosive and destroy a WMD warhead. On the way, a riverside workshop gives up Reactive Metals, Detonators and Synthetics. The explosive is in a marked cache in the wilderness, and the warhead is inside an open warehouse. Blowing it up pays out 5,000 XP and unlocks the Han 86 rifle.

Because Dynamic Operations are generated per match, the same operation can appear somewhere else. In a different session, Ignition Point sends a squad through Cheongun Outskirts in the rain. The explosive is across Hajin River, and the target is a weapons store in Cheongun Village.

Finishing the operation brings in a supply drop with cash, weapons and killstreaks. The rest of that first raid is spent on optional objectives. The squad fights across a highway bridge toward South Island.

On South Island, one player climbs a radio tower to mark a Lieutenant’s location, falls off the ladder, and has to be revived. The squad then pushes through Hajin River Heights under a SAM site warning, clears Compound Echo, and follows the metro line past Wolves Stadium.

Lieutenants and Commanders

Bosses come in two levels. Lieutenants roam the map and drop signature weapons, keys and Dog Tag Cases that move the Boss Board forward. Bale, The Doctor, Iskra, Jin-Tae and Scavenger are Lieutenants, and Jang-Ui is one tied to the Netshin Tech Complex. Commanders are heavier endgame fights that pay 3D printer ingredients and large amounts of cash. Colossus, Deathstalker and a North Korean main battle tank are Commanders.

The first raid ends at the Netshin Tech Complex. An alert warns that Colossus is active nearby, and the squad fights up the stairwells floor by floor against heavy resistance. On the upper server floors they meet Jang-Ui.

Jang-Ui downs the player in an executive office, and there is no self-revive available. His elite guards then kill the other two squad members, and the raid is over.

Operation: Dead Man’s Cache (Story Mission)

Story operations reveal objectives in sequence, and this mission spans a substantial section of the map. The squad rides through Hanrie Village in a sedan, firing from inside the vehicle. Next, they board an inflatable boat and follow Hajin River into the South Korean Border Zone. Afterward, they collect a camouflaged armored truck from the motor pool at Compound Charlie and travel beside the rail lines and riverbanks.

The keypad code is shown directly in the objective text, so there is no hidden puzzle to solve. The mission ends when the player shoots the HVT from a rooftop and “Operation Completed” appears. Other story missions on offer include Operation Silent Ledger (Counterfeit), Operation Shopping Hacks (Underground) and Operation Critical Extraction (Human Intel).

Side ops

Side ops are optional jobs that reward loot, intel or information about the map. They also take time, and the radiation is already limiting how much of that you have. The Dead Man’s Cache squad finished five side ops and one dynamic op:

  • Climb the Lieutenant Hunt Tower: uploads intel that marks a Lieutenant on the map.
  • Secure Lost Supply Drop: a crate marked with red smoke, which in this run held trip wires.
  • Clear the Military Compound: completed at Compound Charlie.
  • Activate UAV Tower: scans a sector for hostiles, here in Imjin Farmland.
  • Crack Safe: drill open locked safes for intel items.
  • Lost Crashed Drone: salvage from a downed enemy drone.

DMZ loot values, weapons and crafting materials

Intel documents are worth the most. Safes are where they show up most often. These are the values from the extracted Dead Man’s Cache haul:

Infantry Invasion Plans$1,000Compound Charlie wall safe
Regional Combat Notes$1,000Imjin Farmland bedroom safe

Tool chests and industrial lockers yield crafting materials, not cash items: Metals, Synthetics, Nitro Compounds, Reactive Metals and Nylon Cloth. The 3D Printer works with four common scrap types: Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals. Higher-level crafts require rarer materials and recipe blueprints. Armor is also available as loot. At Compound Charlie, an ammo cache in the locker room contained a 2-plate vest.

Players swap weapons constantly during a raid. Weapons seen in these runs include the REZ1 12 shotgun, Kastov 762, PPSh-41, MAR-9 marksman rifle, Type 73, WZ.55 Striga and RAM-84. A Care Package Lost Container in Imjin Suburb held a PM-40 Anvil launcher. Backpacks come in three sizes: Basic with eight slots, Medium and Large. Parachutes are not included by default and have to be crafted or looted.

DMZ exfil, Missing in Action and progression

Exfil options include a regular helicopter at a smoke marker, an emergency flare, and a Fulton balloon. The Dead Man’s Cache squad spotted green smoke at a Hajin River Heights roundabout. A teammate summoned a heavy helicopter, while the squad defended the road from charging infantry. Before the radiation cloud reached the landing zone, the entire team boarded using the rear ramp. The screen displayed “Extraction Successful”.

The successful squad also recorded 69 hostile kills and opened 15 loot containers. After-action grades range from F to S++. Ratings are split into Objectives, Combat and Looting.

If the whole squad dies before reaching exfil, you lose everything you were carrying, and your operator is marked Missing in Action. To get them back, you either pay a ransom from your banked cash, which keeps their unlocked traits, or dismiss them and recruit a new Level 1 operator.

You keep account XP and levels even after a failed raid. The wiped squad still reached DMZ Level 2, which unlocked recipes for the Medium Backpack, 2-Plate Armor Vest and Medkit, plus the 3D Printer. Each operator levels separately from 1 to 70 and earns up to 18 trait points. Those points go into three trees: Warfighter for combat and revives, Scout for stealth and recon, and Survivalist for healing and last stand. A max-level operator can be prestiged using cash and rare gear, which adds up to three permanent prestige traits. Dog tags go from Steel up to Onyx III. XP earned in DMZ also counts toward your Multiplayer rank, but Multiplayer XP does not level up DMZ operators.

DMZ Orders track longer goals. The first page covers Gear Up, Crackshot and First Op, and later chapters such as Chapter 04: Counterfeit Pt 2 are tied to story missions. Season 1 is planned to add a compact facility map, and Season 2 will add a northern Russian expansion to Hajin. Players who pre-ordered digitally have had DMZ since October 20. Everyone else gets access when Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23.
