In Enshrouded 1.0, make the Rake at a Workbench using 6 Wood Logs, 2 String and 2 Stone. Take it to the Blacksmith and use 2 Metal Scraps and 1 Charcoal to turn it into the Advanced Rake. This tool reshapes land into even surfaces suitable for building. The game has just two rake types.
Quick answer: Reach player level 5, or place a Flame Altar and learn a pickaxe and an axe. Then craft the Rake at the Workbench and upgrade it at the Blacksmith once the Carpenter is rescued.
How to get the Rake
The Rake is a basic tool, and you can get it early. Its item text sums up the job it does:
“A rake made of the simplest materials. A basic tool used to flatten the ground for upcoming construction works.”

If the Rake doesn’t appear in the Workbench menu yet, you haven’t met either unlock condition. Leveling up to 5 is the fallback route if you haven’t set up the Flame Altar and both tools.

The Advanced Rake is an upgrade of the Rake, not a separate recipe built from scratch. Its item text explains what the upgrade does:
“A Rake enhanced with scrap metal to increase its durability and speed. A decent tool to level hilly ground.”

The recipe uses up your Rake, so craft one at the Workbench before you visit the Blacksmith.
Rake vs Advanced Rake
The upgrade doubles durability and halves stamina cost. Here is how the two rakes compare:
| Stat | Rake | Advanced Rake |
|---|---|---|
| Item level | 1 | 5 |
| Max. Durability | 500 | 1000 |
| Stamina Cost | 2 | 1 |
| Made at | Workbench | Blacksmith |
The Advanced Rake works more quickly, as its description indicates. Using either rake wears down its durability, but both can be repaired. Because the Advanced Rake lasts longer, you need to repair it less often while leveling broad stretches of hilly ground.
