Charcoal is a core crafting material in Enshrouded, feeding everything from the Forge to the Smelter to fire spells. You make it in a Charcoal Kiln, a station you unlock through the Blacksmith and run with nothing more than wood and Dirt.

Quick answer: Build the Charcoal Kiln at the Blacksmith for 20 Stone, place it in your base, then load 12 wood and 3 Dirt to get 10 Charcoal in about two minutes on default world settings.

Unlock the Charcoal Kiln through the Blacksmith

First rescue Oswald Anders, the Blacksmith, and place him at your base. Once he is there, the kiln appears in his craftable stations and costs 20 Stone to build.

Open the Blacksmith tab in Oswald’s crafting menu and select the Charcoal Kiln under Production Place, where its card lists “Blacksmith” and “Sheltered Bed” as requirements. In our game, “Sheltered Bed” was red because Oswald’s bed lacked a shelter.

Once Oswald’s bed had walls and a roof over it, the same card showed a green tick next to “Sheltered Bed” in its requirements row.

Gather wood and Dirt for the recipe

Chop trees with an Axe to collect wood. Any wood type works in the kiln, including Wood Logs, Hardwood, Palm Wood Logs, Conifer Logs, Bamboo Logs, and Tropical Wood.

Dig Dirt out of the ground with the Pickaxe. Digging soil yields Dirt as a terrain material, and Dirt from any region works. In the starting area this is Springlands Dirt.

Run the Charcoal recipe in the kiln

Open the Charcoal Kiln. Its Available Outputs are Charcoal, Wood Acid, and Tar. Select Charcoal.
Add 12 wood and 3 Dirt to the kiln; it operates automatically, yielding 10 Charcoal in roughly two minutes with default world settings.

Collect the Charcoal from the kiln once the batch finishes. The item is described in-game as “Created in a kiln under high temperatures. Burned wood mixed with oxygen creates a flammable material, highly convenient and needed to dive into the world of craftsmanship.”

Other recipes the kiln produces

The same station makes two more materials from wood and Dirt. Switch the output in the kiln to produce either one instead of Charcoal.

What Charcoal is used for

Charcoal is an ingredient in 191 recipes, so a steady supply is worth keeping. These are some of the places it goes.

  • At the Blacksmith, craft the Forge using 30 Stone, 10 Metal Scraps, 10 Charcoal, and 12 Wood Logs.
  • The Smelter combines 10 Charcoal with 10 Copper Ore to produce Copper Bars; making Bronze Bars or Glass also requires 10 Charcoal.
  • The Collector’s Ectoplasm Press takes 10 Charcoal.
  • Make a Wooden Chest at the Carpenter with 3 Charcoal, or a Silver Chest with 6.
  • At the Alchemist, fire spells such as Fireball and Pillar Of Flames use Charcoal.
