Phantom Blade Zero gives you one Dodge button, and the result depends on whether you hold a direction and on your timing. Plain dodges get you out of the way. A well-timed one against a Red-flash attack is a Perfect Dodge, and it can put you behind the enemy.
Quick answer: Press Dodge (Left Shift on PC) on its own for a Backstep Dodge, or with a WASD direction for a Directional Dodge. Press it just before a Red-flash attack lands for a Perfect Dodge.
Backstep Dodge and Directional Dodge controls
On PC, Dodge sits on Left Shift by default, and movement is on WASD. Some tutorial lines call the same action Dash, so treat “Dash” and Dodge as one button. You can confirm the binding under Settings > Controls, or in our Phantom Blade Zero controls guide.
- Backstep Dodge: tap Left Shift with no direction held.
- Directional Dodge: hold a WASD direction and tap Left Shift. It works in any direction.
Holding Left Shift while exploring makes you sprint. Tap it for a dodge.

Add to Google Preferences →Perfect Dodge against Red-flash attacks
Attacks signaled by a red flash must be evaded; blocking won’t stop them. A red trail sweeps across your view when the enemy charges, giving you the cue. The loading tip states the rule: “Parry blue and dodge red. Keep this in mind and you’ll go far.”

To land a Perfect Dodge, wait for the red flash and press Dodge just before the hit connects. When an enemy flashes red, the game prompts you with “try pressing Dash to counterattack!” Ability Training also includes nodes that mention counters “on ranged Red-flash attacks”.
Ghoststep: Slipping behind the enemy
Ghoststep is the reward for perfect timing. If you tap Dodge at the exact moment a Red-flash attack hits, you trigger a Ghoststep and slip behind your opponent.
Dodging isn’t the only way to get a Ghoststep. A Perfect Block against a Blue-flash attack triggers one too: “tapping Deflect at the exact moment of impact to Perfect Block will trigger a Ghoststep, instantly slipping behind your foe!”
Dodge vs block vs parry in Phantom Blade Zero
| Defence | Input | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Dodge | Left Shift (Dash) | Red-flash attacks |
| Block | Right Mouse | Guarding (drains Sha-Chi) |
| Parry | Stance, just before impact | Blue-flash attacks |
The game’s parry instruction reads “Press Stance just before an enemy attack lands to perform a Parry!” A parry costs no Sha-Chi, but holding Guard Stance drains it. A Red-flash attack can’t be blocked at all, so against those, Dodge is the only answer. Timing for both is in our Phantom Blade Zero parry guide, and holding guard in our Guard Stance guide.
