Phantom Blade Zero splits its offense into two kinds of strings. Standard Combos are light-attack chains. Sha-Chi Combos end in Heavy Attacks and draw on a meter that also powers your defense. The game introduces both during the prologue sparring with Zuo Shang, and the full input list appears on screen there.
Quick answer: Sha-Chi Combos are heavy-attack strings (F on PC by default) that start with zero to three Light Attacks and finish with Heavy Attacks. They cost Sha-Chi but break an enemy’s guard faster.
| Combo | PC input |
|---|---|
| 1 | F, F, F |
| 2 | Left Mouse, F, F |
| 3 | Left Mouse, Left Mouse, F, F |
| 4 | Left Mouse, Left Mouse, Left Mouse, F, F |

Every combo ends in Heavy Attacks. In the game, Heavy Attack is also called the Sha-Chi Attack. The default PC bindings live under Settings > Controls (full list in our Phantom Blade Zero controls guide):
- Light Attack: Left Mouse
- Heavy Attack (Sha-Chi Attack): F
- Lock On: mouse wheel click
- Block: Right Mouse
- Dodge: Left Shift
- Power Surge: Q
- Switch Weapon: 1
The Sha-Chi meter: Your bar and the enemy’s
The extended Sha-Chi meter sits at the screen’s lower-left, beside the healing gourd; each enemy has a separate one beneath its health bar. When you perform your first Sha-Chi Combo, a tooltip appears with the text “Sha-Chi Combos consume Sha-Chi” and points to your meter, letting you track its drop as the combo connects.

Combos aren’t the only thing that spends the meter. Defense draws from the same bar:
- Holding Guard Stance drains Sha-Chi continuously.
- Blocking an attack drains extra Sha-Chi on top of that.
- Parrying costs you nothing, and it severely depletes the attacker’s Sha-Chi (see how parries, bells and death work in is Phantom Blade Zero a souls-like).
That puts your heavy-attack strings and your blocks in competition for the same resource. A run of Sha-Chi Combos followed by a long stretch of blocking can empty the bar quickly.

Pressing Light Attack repeatedly produces Standard Attacks. The Standard Combo is Left Mouse pressed four times. Pressing Heavy Attack repeatedly produces Sha-Chi Attacks instead. Both kinds of combo wear down an enemy’s Sha-Chi, but Sha-Chi Combos do it faster.
The prologue teaches this in two tasks. The first task is “Hit enemies with Standard Combos!” and its prompt also has you use Lock-On, which gets ticked once you’ve done it. The next task is “Land two different Sha-Chi Combos on the enemy! (0/2)” and it lists all four inputs on screen.

You can confirm a combo registered by watching the counter move to (1/2). The task asks for two different combos, so the second one has to be a different input from the table.

If you skipped a tutorial prompt, you can read it again under Settings > Help. The tutorials are grouped into Exploration, Offense, and Defense.
Guard break and Breach
The goal of draining an enemy’s bar is to break their guard. Once an enemy’s Sha-Chi is depleted, they become Guard-Broken.
Emptying an enemy’s Sha-Chi also Breaches them. A Breached target can’t block and takes extra damage. A parry speeds this up because it severely depletes the attacker’s Sha-Chi.
Some enemies carry shields. Attacking from the front doesn’t break shields easily, but heavy weapons like the Dread Axe are effective against them.
Refilling Sha-Chi by switching weapons
You can equip two weapons, and swapping between them with Switch Weapon (1 on PC) fully replenishes your Sha-Chi. The swap has a short cooldown, so you can’t chain it endlessly. In practice, you can spend the bar on Sha-Chi Combos or blocks, then switch weapons to refill it. Every weapon you can pair up is in our Phantom Blade Zero weapons list.
The fight with the Man in Black puts this to use. The game warns that he can deplete your Sha-Chi and tells you to switch weapons to restore it. It also warns that his own Sha-Chi recovers rapidly if you stop attacking, so you need to keep the pressure on until his guard breaks.
Sha-Chi Essence and Power Surge
Sha-Chi Essence is a separate resource from the Sha-Chi bar. Each Power Surge (Q on PC) spends one Sha-Chi Essence. Power Surges can interrupt powerful enemy skills, which makes the Essence worth saving for those moments.
Sha-Chi Attacks build Sha-Chi Essence faster, which gives the F-finished combos a second payoff beyond breaking guards. Parrying also generates Sha-Chi Essence while costing no Sha-Chi.
