Power Surge is Phantom Blade Zero’s weapon art, fueled by a separate resource. It is introduced in the prologue’s final combat-tutorial step during the fight with Zuo Shang. Learning how to replenish it lets you use it much more often than the tutorial suggests.

Quick answer: Press Power Surge (Q on PC) to unleash your weapon’s special art. Each use spends one Sha-Chi Essence, which you build with Sha-Chi Attacks and parries.

Power Surge controls on PC

These are the default PC bindings for every input involved, as listed under Settings > Controls (full list in our Phantom Blade Zero controls guide). Tutorial prompts sometimes call the Power Surge button “Special Attack.” It is the same input.

How to use Power Surge

The prologue spar against Zuo Shang teaches the move through the objective, “Press [Q] to use Power Surge on enemies!” An adjacent tooltip for the weapon icon in the bottom-right corner gives its cost: “Power Surges consume one Sha-Chi Essence”.

The player faces a lone swordsman on a stone courtyard in a bamboo grove while a tooltip explains that Power Surges consume one Sha-Chi Essence.
Check beneath the weapon icon in the bottom-right corner. A glowing purple pip beside the Q prompt indicates that Sha-Chi Essence is ready to spend.
Get close to your target and press Q. Your character leaps in and performs the weapon’s Power Surge art.
Watch the art land on the enemy. That use has cost you one Sha-Chi Essence, so you’ll need to build more before the next one.

With the starting staff, the art connects with Zuo Shang. That’s how you know it worked. Once it lands, the sparring session ends and the real fight begins, with the objective changing to “Defeat Zuo Shang!”

How to earn Sha-Chi Essence

Sha-Chi Essence is the purple pip under your weapon icon, next to the Q prompt. Two actions fill it.

  • Parrying with Right Mouse generates Sha-Chi Essence (see how to parry).
  • Sha-Chi Attacks on F build Sha-Chi Essence faster (all four inputs in our Sha-Chi Combos guide).

When you have filled it completely, the game tells you so with the prompt “Sha-Chi Essence is full. Press Special Attack to use your Power Surge!”

Sha-Chi Essence is not the Sha-Chi bar in the bottom-left corner. That bar is the guard and combo meter. The Essence you spend on Power Surge only shows as the pip by the weapon icon on the right.

When to use Power Surge: Interrupting enemy skills

Power Surge can stop powerful enemy skills. Because each use spends Essence, save a pip for when an enemy begins a major attack instead of using it as soon as it appears. Regular parries and Sha-Chi Attacks restore the pip between those moments.

Every weapon has its own Power Surge

Power Surge is not a single move. Each weapon carries its own Power Surge art, so the art you see depends on what you are holding. The starting staff’s version is the one the prologue teaches. Press 1 to switch weapons, and Q will trigger the art tied to the weapon you are now holding. The cost is still one Sha-Chi Essence. Every weapon and its Power Surge art is in our Phantom Blade Zero weapons list.

Zero State costs 3 Sha-Chi Essence

Power Surge is not the only thing that draws on Sha-Chi Essence. Zero State takes a bigger share, and the game’s prompt says so directly: “Consume 3 Sha-Chi Essence and press Zero to enter Zero State!” Spending Essence on Power Surge leaves less for Zero State, so decide which one you are saving for.

Keep Sha-Chi Essence after death with Ability Training

Ability Training includes a node that reads “Retain Sha-Chi Essence upon death.” With it unlocked, the Essence you have built up stays with you after you die.
