The Crimson Forest Tunnel Crank is a Story Item in Phantom Blade Zero’s Crimson Forest. It lies in a Butcher’s camp a short walk from the Outlaw Trap bell, and it opens a sealed shaft right next to that same bell.

Quick answer: Head west from the Outlaw Trap bell to the Butcher’s camp, then pick up the crank beside the chopping table. Return to the stone post on the ledge immediately north of the bell and press E.

Rest at the Outlaw Trap bell before you set out so your health and Medicine are full. The camp is guarded, and the walk there has its own threat.

Leave the bell along the westbound route that runs at the same height. Look for blue blossoms glowing beside a stone lantern beneath a rock arch; this marks the correct route and a Memory Flower location.

Pass the mounted bandit patrolling by the flowers. Its charge hits hard, and it can absorb a lot of damage. On this stretch, slipping past is easier than taking it on.
Head farther west to find a body slumped beside a large rock, marked with an E prompt. The lore note here is “Words in Blood”, confirming that you are following the correct route.

A stone barrier stops you from going straight, so turn left and descend to the trail beside the stream. A wooden cage and lantern post stand by the path, with the Butcher’s camp just beyond them.

The Butcher and two Sick Dogs guard the crank

A Butcher stands by the chopping tables. Two Sick Dogs wait on the exact spot where the crank lies. If you leave the dogs alone, their bites take a large share of your health. Deal with them first so they can’t catch you in the middle of the Butcher fight.

On WAYFARER, you can bring the Butcher down in about 88 seconds with one heal. Guard, dodge, and punish him in the gaps between his combos. The Butcher and the dogs together are worth about 590 Remnant Dust.

Picking up the crank and the other camp items

The campsite is distinctive: a cleaver rests on a chopping table, surrounded by cages, red candles, and hanging bodies. Check the ground next to the table for an orange glint, then press E.

The item card shows “Story Item”, “CRIMSON FOREST TUNNEL CRANK”, and:

“A crank found beside the Butcher’s chopping block. Perhaps it opens another grisly underground passage.”

There are other pickups at the camp. Grab them before you head back.

Preservation Talisman Fragment I is one of two halves of a talisman. Its card reads “The upper half of a talisman cleanly severed by a sharp blade. Grease and blood still stain the cut edge.” and “Its former owner appears to have been a greedy merchant, always using cheap tricks to deceive his customers. The butcher merely gave him what he deserved.”

The matching half is Preservation Talisman Fragment II. Its card says “When reunited with its upper half, it reduces poison damage.” More on the talisman effects in the accessories list.

Where to use the crank: The stone post just north of Outlaw Trap

Return to the starting area to find the stone post for the crank. It stands on the ledge immediately north of the Outlaw Trap bell, beside the wooden hatch containing 8 Solvent.

Return to the Outlaw Trap bell. Go into the pit below the ledge just north of it.
Climb the rock face at the Space prompt to reach the ledge.

Walk into the shaft beside the post once its wooden grate opens. You land below without taking any damage.

How you know the crank worked

The crank is consumed when you use it. A “CRIMSON FOREST TUNNEL CRANK” notice appears beside the post as the wooden grate covering the shaft swings open, exposing a dark drop beneath a timber frame.

The underground passage mentioned on the item card is at the bottom. This timber-framed tunnel has a wooden walkway, crates and jars, torches mounted on the walls, and a wooden gate.

Where the tunnel leads: a shortcut to the second Butcher’s yard

Once you drop into the shaft below the crank post in Crimson Forest, a short timbered walkway carries you north and out onto the canyon. A ladder at the far end goes down to the second Butcher’s yard. That lets you reach the yard from the Outlaw Trap bell without crossing the hound pit.

Start at the bottom of the shaft and head north along the wooden walkway. You pass a wooden gate, some crates and jars, and a torch mounted on the wall.

Keep going until the walkway ends. The tunnel opens onto the canyon here, and red-leafed trees fill the view beyond.

Climb down the ladder at the end of the walkway. You land at the foot of the canyon without taking fall damage. Hanging bodies and a lantern sit ahead on the path, which leads to the second Butcher’s yard.

Follow the path into the yard and check its west corner for Preservation Talisman Fragment II. The yard also holds the second Butcher, and the Butcher fight has its own breakdown.

Getting back to the Outlaw Trap bell

Climb the ladder back up into the tunnel.
Walk south along the walkway to the bottom of the shaft.
Trigger the “Space” prompt at the shaft wall, then climb directly upward through the shaft. This brings you to the platform beside the lift post; the Outlaw Trap bell is a short distance to the south.
