Quick answer: Press whatever key each prompt shows, because it changes every time. Mash that key fast on the clash and grapple prompts. A miss restarts the sequence.

What the Iron Jade Strike is

The Iron Jade Strike is a combo scene in the third phase of the Mu Xiaokui fight in Phantom Blade Zero. It happens in the Village of Lu in Chapter 1, at the Lakeside above Yuzan’s arena, once Jade Dancer and Iron Fiend are fighting beside Mu Xiaokui. The Young Mistress quest unlocks that third phase. When the strike starts, you lose direct control of Soul and the scene plays out as a chain of button prompts.

Iron Fiend charges Soul through the grass, and the camera cuts to a close-up of Mu Xiaokui. Jade Dancer leaps from a boat roof, and Iron Fiend jumps in after her. Soul’s blade then clashes with Jade Dancer’s gauntlet, Iron Fiend grapples Soul, and the scene ends with Soul face to face with Mu Xiaokui.

What the prompts look like

A key symbol appears within a white circle that contracts as the response window gets shorter. A new key is chosen randomly for each attempt, so a prompt at a particular point may use a different key on your next try. Mouse prompts can indicate either the left or right button, with the symbol showing which side to press.

The F key may also appear.

The prompts come in two types:

  • Single-press prompts. One press of the shown key in time clears them. The game slows down while one is on screen.
  • Mash prompts. The ring only fills with fast, repeated presses. The clash and the grapple both use this type.

Iron Jade Strike prompts in order

When Jade Dancer and Iron Fiend spring toward Soul, tap the displayed key once immediately after it appears. If the prompt shows the right mouse button, pressing it makes Soul parry.
As Soul’s blade collides with Jade Dancer’s gauntlet, tap the indicated key repeatedly as quickly as possible until the ring is full. A pace of roughly one press per second is too slow to succeed.

When Iron Fiend grapples Soul, mash the shown key again at full speed until the ring fills.

When Soul ends up facing Mu Xiaokui, press or mash the key the prompt shows.

Read the icon every time instead of pressing from memory. The key changes between attempts, so a key that worked on the last try may be wrong on this one.

What happens when you miss a prompt

A missed prompt or a response that’s too slow triggers a failure scene. Soul is knocked down into the reeds, and Mu Xiaokui approaches before kneeling beside him. The strike resets at Iron Fiend’s charge. The cycle repeats roughly every 27 seconds until you complete all the prompts.

Holding a key down does nothing, and slow presses never clear the clash. Only fast mashing fills those rings.

How you know the Iron Jade Strike is passed

When you clear every prompt, the strike ends with Mu Xiaokui down beside a burning boat. The fight’s closing scene and rewards follow, and the loop does not restart.
