Quick answer: Ride a boat across Meigu Lake and gather Yan’er’s six Memory Flowers. Then beat Yan Qiansui on the island beside the Meigu Songhouse Dock bell to get the Illusory Pipa Strings.

Allure of Vanity is a side quest, or tale, in Phantom Blade Zero. It takes place on Meigu Lake and ends with a boss fight and a piece of the broken Illusory Pipa.

Before you start: you need a boat

The six memory flowers float on open Meigu Lake water, between about 98 m and 234 m from the Meigu Songhouse Dock bell, so you need a boat before you can collect them. The Sha-Chi powered boat tale is how you get one.

Once you have the boat, ring the Meigu Songhouse Dock bell. It’s the reference point for every flower and for the island where the quest ends. The full list of bell locations shows where it sits.

Allure of Vanity walkthrough

The quest log tracks two objectives, in this order:

  1. “Collect all the Memory Flowers on Meigu Lake”
  2. “Find Yan Qiansui on the island in Meigu Lake”
Sail out and pick up each YAN’ER’S MEMORY FLOWER on the lake. Each one unlocks a titled memory. If you’re new to these pickups, the memory flowers overview explains how they work.

The six memories are titled, in order:

  1. “I. ALLURE OF VANITY”
  2. “II. BLOODLINE”
  3. “III. INTO THE LAKE”
  4. “IV. YAN QIANSUI”
  5. “V. THE OFFERING”
  6. “VI. ALL HAS CHANGED”
Once you’ve collected the sixth flower, make your way to the island. The quest log advances to its second objective. Yan Qiansui is waiting there, roughly 19 m from the Meigu Songhouse Dock bell.
Defeat her. She appears as the boss YAN QIANSUI, THE ZITHER MAIDEN, and beating her completes Allure of Vanity and hands over both rewards.

Allure of Vanity rewards

Beating Yan Qiansui gives you two items. The first is FANATIC’S FRAGMENT: ATTACHMENT, which carries this card text:

“A fragment fallen from memories of brighter days. Knowing it was all in vain, they still plucked the strings again and again, searching for an old dream that could never be reclaimed.”

The second is the ILLUSORY PIPA STRINGS, one of three fragments from the broken Illusory Pipa. The card reads:

“After Yan Qiansui’s defeat, her zither shimmered with iridescent radiance, revealing that she had strung it with the Illusory Pipa’s strings, bestowed by the High Elder.

Only Myst of the Three Sisters can restore the Illusory Pipa. Once all three pieces of the Illusory Pipa have been collected, seek her out.”
