The Season 8.5 update reshuffles the Duelist pecking order in Marvel Rivals, and at Diamond rank and above the gap between the safest picks and the dead weight is wide. Dive is creeping back into the meta, poke fliers are still punished, and a fresh batch of nerfs and buffs has moved several familiar names. Here is exactly where each DPS hero lands for high-level competitive play and why.
Quick answer: The top competitive Duelists in Season 8.5 are Daredevil, Wolverine, Phoenix, Star-Lord, The Punisher, Magik, and Elsa Bloodstone in S Tier. New hero Cyclops is unranked until the meta settles.
Season 8.5 Duelist tier list (Diamond and above)
These rankings are tuned for Diamond rank and above, where execution gaps close and counterplay knowledge is high. A hero that dominates casual lobbies on raw kit strength can fall apart once opponents know how to punish it, so this order will not match a Bronze-to-Platinum list.
| Tier | Duelists |
|---|---|
| S | Daredevil, Wolverine, Phoenix, Star-Lord, The Punisher, Magik, Elsa Bloodstone |
| A | Iron Fist, Winter Soldier, Psylocke, Hela, Moon Knight, Namor |
| B | Black Cat, Blade, Deadpool, Human Torch, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Storm, Black Panther, Hawkeye |
| C | Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Mister Fantastic, Squirrel Girl |
A low tier does not mean a hero is unplayable. You can practice any of these characters and carry a match. The order reflects how reliably each one performs in a high-level setting where opponents know the matchups.

These are the meta-defining picks. They hold strong stats, fill roles nobody else covers, and survive their seasonal nerfs without losing viability.
- Phoenix is the single best Duelist in the game right now. She was heavily overtuned in 8.0, and the 8.5 nerfs barely dent her output. She has effectively taken Hela’s spotlight.
- Daredevil took his usual seasonal nerf in 8.5, but it made little impact. He still sees heavy play and backs it up with solid stats, anchoring the dominant aggressive dive archetype.
- Wolverine keeps returning to the top as the meta’s premier tank killer. No other hero fills his role the same way, and this meta has a big need for someone to deal with annoying tanks.
- The Punisher has surged thanks to dive. He swaps between ranged fire and a shotgun to handle aggressive divers, and with Winter Soldier falling off, he stepped into the open S-Tier slot.
- Magik got slight preemptive nerfs ahead of a dive season but remains one of the best dive DPS picks. With ultimates toned down across the board, she has more room to do her job without being shut out by healer ults.
- Star-Lord caught a quick nerf following his big 8.0 buffs. The changes matter more at the very top of play, but for most of the ladder he is still a top-tier pick.
- Elsa Bloodstone picked up a small 8.5 buff on top of an already strong kit. With Black Cat falling out of the meta, Elsa stepped up to fill the void.
A Tier Duelists
Reliable picks that perform well but do not dominate the way the S Tier does. Several of these are one meta shift away from rising.
- Hela drops to A Tier despite no changes to her kit. Phoenix simply does what she does at a higher ceiling, so you now mostly see Hela only when Phoenix is banned.
- Moon Knight had to be toned down with Cyclops arriving, since both punish grouped enemies. He is still very usable but sits at a low A-Tier position rather than S.
- Winter Soldier has leveled out at A Tier after a long run of buffs and nerfs. He is well rounded now and a reliable option if you want a new main.
- Psylocke benefits from slight buffs and the shift toward dive, but you want to farm her ultimate, and ult charge was nerfed. She sits right on the line between B-plus and A-minus, with A being the fairer read.
- Iron Fist got a small surprise buff in the 8.0 patch. He is still outperformed by the top divers for now, but these are the changes that quietly make a hero strong once the best divers get toned down.
- Namor remains a solid off-meta pick. You do not see him as often as other DPS, but a fresh 8.5 buff keeps him justified in A Tier.
B Tier Duelists
Functional heroes held back by the current meta, their flier weakness, or extreme difficulty. Many are waiting on a return of dive or a softening of poke to climb.
- Black Cat‘s reign is over. She took one of the largest nerf packages since launch, with less damage, a shorter targeting range, fewer dashes, and more expensive relics. Still playable, but no longer a constant pick.
- Hawkeye has slipped as dive becomes more relevant. He can still one-shot a big chunk of the roster, but teams are far more mobile now, making it harder for him to land those shots.
- Black Panther is a surprise at B Tier, but his performance has been weak compared to other divers. Black Cat replaced him in the meta, and he needs a supporting comp to resurge.
- Iron Man and Storm are solid characters stuck behind the prevalence of poke, which keeps fliers as easy kills. Both look ready to spike the moment dive fully takes over and poke gets toned down.
- Human Torch got minor 8.5 buffs but carries the same flier curse. The buffs are nice, but they do not matter much when he dies so easily in the air.
- Spider-Man moves up to B Tier thanks to his 8.0 ultimate buff, which makes his most relied-on kill method more lethal. He is arguably the hardest hero to play, so top players still squeeze far more value from him than the general playerbase.
- Blade and Deadpool both received buffs that, once again, were not enough to push them into real viability. Deadpool’s DPS form remains weaker than his tank and healer versions.
C Tier Duelists
These four cannot find a foothold in competitive play. Some shine in casual lobbies, but the ranked meta has no room for them right now.
- Black Widow stays at the bottom. She lives in Hawkeye’s shadow because he can one-shot and she cannot, and even Hela performs her job better. No recent change has been enough to lift her.
- Scarlet Witch tops the casual meta but lacks DPS output for ranked. Locking onto enemies for slow, draining damage cannot compete with the quick bursts other Duelists provide.
- Mister Fantastic got an 8.0 buff, but his fundamentals are unchanged. He rules casual play yet is essentially nonexistent in the broader competitive meta.
- Squirrel Girl received an 8.0 buff that does nothing for her baseline issues. An extra acorn or another jump is a mediocre change that does not move her in ranked.
Cyclops is unranked for now
The new hero added with Season 8.5 is Cyclops, the leader of the X-Men. Early impressions point to yet another character launching in a strong state, but it is too soon to judge him fairly. He will receive a proper meta placement once players learn to use him and play against him. Until then, treat him as a high-potential pick without a confirmed competitive ranking.
Expect this order to keep moving. Dive is on the way back, poke is still strong, and the next balance pass could flip several B-Tier fliers into contenders. For now, the seven S-Tier names above are your safest bets for climbing at Diamond and above.
