Black Widow has spent most of Marvel Rivals sitting at the bottom of the roster, with a pick rate that rarely climbs past a few percent and a reputation as a throw pick in serious lobbies. Season 9 finally rebuilds her from the ground up. NetEase Games has stripped out the default sniper scope, sped up her normal fire, handed her a brand-new Ultimate, and added a close-range slam, turning her into an aggressive flanker instead of a stationary long-range hitscan.
Quick answer: Aim-down-sights sniping is removed from Black Widow’s primary fire and moved onto her new Ultimate. Her normal attack now fires much faster but can no longer one-shot, her old ultimate becomes a regular ability, and she keeps her sprint, spinning kick, and jump without any stamina cost. The rework goes live with Season 9 on July 10, 2026 at 9 AM UTC.
Black Widow’s new primary fire
The biggest structural change is that the scoped sniper mode no longer lives on her basic weapon. In her default state, Black Widow can no longer aim down sights to line up a one-shot headshot. Instead, the fire rate of her primary attack has been raised significantly, so she now trades single high-value bullets for a faster stream of damage. She stays a shooter with a rifle identity, but she is built to fight at closer range rather than snipe from the backline.

Her old ultimate, the Electro-Plasma explosion, is no longer an ultimate at all. It has been converted into one of her standard abilities, where it deals damage and applies a slow to enemies it hits. That frees up her Ultimate slot for something with far more impact.
The new Ultimate is where the sniping now happens. Activating it drops Black Widow into an aim-down-sights sniper mode for 20 seconds, during which she can fire up to six powerful piercing shots. These shots cannot one-shot a target, but they carry a wider hitbox so that even non-critical hits still land meaningful damage, keeping the output consistent instead of all-or-nothing. It is a much stronger closer than her previous ultimate, which had little effect on a fight.
New ground slam and movement changes
To support the closer-range playstyle, Black Widow gains a new ability that lets her leap and slam into the ground, dealing area-of-effect damage on impact. This gives her a way to open or extend melee combos and pressure enemies who close the gap on her.
Her signature mobility carries over. She keeps her sprint, her spinning kick, and her jump, but these no longer drain stamina. Running and super jumping for free means she can reposition around a flank far more often than before, which is central to how she is meant to be played now.
Old kit vs reworked kit
| Element | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Primary fire | ADS sniper, can one-shot | Faster fire rate, no scope, cannot one-shot |
| Sniper scope | Default weapon mode | Moved to the Ultimate |
| Ultimate | Electro-Plasma explosion | ADS sniper mode, 20 seconds, up to 6 piercing shots |
| Old ultimate | Ultimate only | Standard ability with damage and slow |
| New ability | None | Ground slam for AoE damage |
| Sprint, kick, jump | Drained stamina | No stamina cost |
Her new role as a flanking Duelist
Taken together, these changes push Black Widow away from passive backline sniping and toward aggressive flanking. She dives into the enemy’s space, uses her free mobility to stay hard to pin down, chains close-range damage with her slam, and saves the scoped Ultimate for the moment she needs a burst of ranged pressure. The reworked movement and shorter engagement range also line up with Season 9’s new Regenerative Shield mechanic, which rewards high-mobility flankers who can dip out of a fight and recover before re-engaging.
Note: this is a full overhaul rather than a numbers tweak, so anyone who mained her before Season 9 will need to relearn her core loop. The scope is now a cooldown resource on her Ultimate, not something she can rely on every fight.
When the Black Widow rework goes live
The reworked kit arrives with the Marvel Rivals Season 9 update, version 20260710, on July 10, 2026 at 9 AM UTC. You will know the changes are active once you load into the new season and see Black Widow’s ability layout swapped, with the scope missing from her default fire and the new Ultimate in its place. The same update introduces Jubilee as a new Strategist, a complete Team-Up system overhaul, wide balance changes, and the Regenerative Shield mechanic, with the Thebes convoy map following on July 23, 2026.
