Haze Seas Gum Fruit: Mastery Moves and Gear 2, 4, 5 Awakening

Every mastery threshold, plus the exact requirements and materials to unlock all three Gum Gear transformations.

Every mastery threshold, plus the exact requirements and materials to unlock all three Gum Gear transformations.

The Gum fruit is a Mythical Paramecia fruit in Haze Seas, and it stays relevant deep into the endgame because of its three Gear transformations. Each Gear carries its own moveset, so the fruit only reaches full strength once you push mastery and awaken all three forms. Here is exactly what you need at every stage, from the first purchase to the Gear 5 cutscene.

Quick answer: Buy Gum from the Fruit Dealer, raise its mastery to 300, then awaken Gear 2 at the Bubble Island trainer, Gear 4 with Gear 4 Books at the Sea 2 Poneglyph, and Gear 5 with Drums of Liberation from the Dragon Boss.

How to get the Gum fruit

Gum comes from the Fruit Dealer NPC, Cynthia. You can buy it outright or gamble for it through the Fruit Gacha. Direct purchase is the reliable route; the gacha is a long shot unless you hit pity.

Gum mastery thresholds and move unlocks

Mastery is what unlocks the individual skills on the fruit. Your first move is free at 0 mastery, and the rest open at fixed levels bound to specific keys. Mastery caps at 500, and every 2 levels adds +1 to the fruit’s combat stat, up to 250 points, so grinding also raises your damage.

The base Gum fruit carries eight skills. Two of its keys, N and P, are rare across the whole roster and currently appear only on a small number of fruits.

Each Gear form has its own separate moveset with its own thresholds. The layout shifts slightly between the base fruit and the Gears, most notably the C move, which is free on Gear 4 and Gear 5 instead of gated at 50.

The fastest way to build mastery is to hit tough targets. Bosses give 10 mastery EXP per hit and superbosses give 150, compared to 0.1 for a basic M1 and 2 for a regular NPC. Keep your target within about 200 levels of your own, since anything more than 200 levels above you only pays out 0.2x EXP.

Unlock Gear 2 at Bubble Island

Gear 2 is a straightforward purchase from a trainer, but the entrance is easy to miss. It sits behind a section of darker-colored wall on Bubble Island.

Travel to Bubble Island and look along the walls for the hidden entrance concealed behind the darker-colored panel. Slip through it to reach the cave.
Talk to the Fitness Trainer Yoga NPC inside. He teaches the Gear 2 technique to Gum users who meet the requirements.
Pay to learn the transformation. You need Level 750, 300 Gum mastery, and 100,000 Beli. Once you accept, Gear 2 is available and you can start leveling its own moveset.

Unlock Gear 4 with Gear 4 Books

Gear 4 is where the grind starts. Clicking a book by itself does nothing now; the actual awakening happens at the Poneglyph in Sea 2, so you need both the material and access to that stone. Reaching it means clearing the Sea 2 level gate, which lands around 2,200.

Farm the Gear 4 Boss on Bubble Island in the First Sea for a Gear 4 Book. The book is a rare drop at roughly 0.5%, so expect a long repeat farm rather than one lucky kill.
Ride the ferry NPC to the Second Sea and find the Poneglyph near the mount. Interact with it to open the awakening prompt.
Select Gear 4 from the form list and accept when it confirms you meet the requirement. The stone glows, a cutscene plays, and the transformation unlocks.
Repeat with more books. One book only unlocks the form itself, and each additional move costs another Gear 4 Book, so plan for roughly five to six books before the full kit is open.

Unlock Gear 5 with Drums of Liberation

Gear 5 is the final and strongest awakening, and it uses a single material, the Drums of Liberation. Getting it is the hardest stretch of the whole run because the Dragon Boss on Dragon Island has to be summoned before you can fight it.

Head to Dragon Island in Sea 2 and set your spawn point there first. The soul grind can kill you, and a wrong spawn sends you all the way back.
Defeat Soul NPCs on the island to collect 1,000 Souls. Clearing them summons the Dragon Boss.
Fight the Dragon Boss with your Gum fruit equipped and nothing else. Killing it with Gum guarantees a 100% Drums of Liberation drop.
Return to the Sea 2 Poneglyph, pick Gear 5, and spend one Drums of Liberation to awaken it. As with Gear 4, each remaining Gear 5 move needs another Drums, so keep farming the Dragon Boss to fill out the moveset.

Note: The Poneglyph in the First Sea only teases that Poneglyphs awaken powers. It does not grant anything. The Sea 2 Poneglyph is the only one that completes Gear 4 and Gear 5, so that is the one worth traveling for.

How to confirm each awakening worked

After a successful awakening at the Poneglyph, the stone glows, the cutscene plays, and a closing message confirms that a new power has awakened within you. The transformation then appears as an unlocked entry in your Gum move menu instead of reading as unawakened.

The awakenings also carry titles. Awakening Gear 4 grants the Gear 4th title, and fully awakening Gear 5 grants the Joyboy title.

Mistakes that waste the grind

  • Clicking a Gear 4 Book directly. It does nothing on its own now; the awakening only happens at the Sea 2 Poneglyph.
  • Fighting the Dragon Boss with the wrong fruit. Only a Gum kill guarantees the Drums of Liberation drop, so any other fruit is a wasted attempt.
  • Skipping the spawn point on Dragon Island before the soul grind. Deaths are likely while clearing 1,000 Souls, and a misplaced spawn costs you a long trip back.
  • Expecting one book or one Drums to finish a form. Each covers a single move, so both Gear 4 and Gear 5 need repeat farming for the full kit.

Plan the whole run around one gate at a time. Get Gum equipped and pushed to 300 mastery, bank the currency for Gear 2, then treat the boss farms as the slow back half. Because the Drums of Liberation is a guaranteed drop, the real time cost is reaching each boss and the mastery threshold rather than fighting drop-rate luck.
