Universal Tower Defense X: Best Way to Farm Tears Rifts

How the rotating Tears bosses work, what each rift drops, and the pity counters that guarantee rare units.

How the rotating Tears bosses work, what each rift drops, and the pity counters that guarantee rare units.

Tears are the end-game rift stages in Universal Tower Defense X, and they are the fastest repeatable source of Universal Gems plus a handful of rare units and relics. The catch is that the boss on offer changes on a fixed timer, so the rift holding the unit you want is not always available. Knowing the rotation and the exact drop tables lets you farm the right stage instead of grinding a boss that will never give you your target.

Quick answer: Run whichever Tears rift is currently active for its guaranteed 12,000 Universal Gems (both S1 and Part 2) per clear, and keep clearing the same boss to build its pity counter toward the rare unit you want. The active boss swaps every 3 hours, so wait for the rotation if your target rift is not up.

How the Tears rotation works

Tears stages swap to a new boss every 3 hours. Three rifts make up the current cycle: The Strongest Of Today, The Strongest Of All Time, and The Blanco Beast. Only the active rift can be entered, so the boss you can farm is decided by the timer, not by your choice.

Because the swap is on a strict clock, plan around it. If you are chasing a drop tied to a specific rift, farm heavily while that boss is up, then switch focus when it rotates out. The guaranteed currency payouts are similar across rifts, so any active Tears stage is worth running for gems even when it is not your unit target.

How the pity counters work

The rare drops in each rift have a pity value next to their percentage. That number is the clear count that guarantees the drop if the random roll has not already given it to you. For example, Boundless Orb sits at 2% with a pity of 40, so 40 clears without one will force the drop on the next qualifying run.

Lower pity numbers reach the guarantee faster. Ultimate Sword has the friendliest pity in the current lineup at 20, while the unit drops (Infinity Sorcerer, Cursed Vessel, Rohan (Mystic)) all sit at 25. Because pity is tracked per drop, staying on one rift is the reliable way to bank a specific unit rather than spreading runs across bosses.

Farm the active rift efficiently

Open the Tears menu and check which boss is currently active. Match it to the drop table above so you know whether the rift holds the unit or relic you are after.
Bring a team that can clear the boss reliably on its own so you can repeat runs without babysitting. A strong single DPS carry keeps clears fast, which is what turns pity counters and the flat 12,000-per-currency payout into steady progress.
Keep clearing the same rift back-to-back to build its pity total toward your target drop. Every completed run also awards the guaranteed Universal Gems S1, Universal Gems Part 2, Gems, Player Experience, and Gold, so no clear is wasted even before the rare drop lands.
When the 3-hour timer swaps the boss, decide whether to chase the new rift’s rewards or wait for your target to rotate back in. Track how many clears you already put into a rift, since its pity progress is what you are protecting.

How to confirm a clear paid out

A successful Tears clear always returns the 100% rewards for that rift, so your Universal Gems balance should jump by 12,000 on each currency line, and your Gold and Player Experience should tick up right after the results screen. If those guaranteed rewards did not appear, the run did not register as a clear.

The most common reason you cannot farm your target is timing rather than failure. If the boss you want is missing from the menu, it has rotated out, and you need to wait for the next 3-hour cycle to bring it back before its pity progress can continue.
