Find and solve the Tulum stele, then open the sealed temple door for the Mayan Outfit and Yax Tun Pendant.

Find and solve the Tulum stele, then open the sealed temple door for the Mayan Outfit and Yax Tun Pendant.

Tulum is the Assassin stronghold that anchors the entire Mayan Mysteries quest in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. It holds one of the game’s Mayan Stelae, and it is also the place you return to once every stone is collected. Knowing exactly where the pillar stands and what the sealed door needs saves a lot of backtracking.

Quick answer: The Tulum Mayan Stele stands at the western corner of the stronghold (map coordinates 30,382). Climb on top of it, use the synchronize command, then rotate and scale the glowing outline until it lines up with the objects on the ground to collect its Mayan Stone.

Tulum Mayan Stele location

The pillar sits at the western corner of the Tulum stronghold, at map coordinates 30,382. It falls under the southern group of stelae, so you will already be in the region when the quest brings you here.

Tulum first appears during Sequence 04: Overrun and Outnumbered, when James Kidd leads Edward to the stronghold. There you see a large doorway sealing off the inner temple. Kidd explains that you must gather the other Mayan Stones to get past it, which formally begins the Mayan Mysteries hunt.

How to solve the Tulum stele

Approach the pillar at the western corner of the stronghold and climb to the top.

Use the synchronize command to start the alignment puzzle. A glowing outline appears over the surroundings.
Rotate and scale the outline until it matches the physical objects on the ground, such as rocks and fallen debris. When the shapes line up, the puzzle resolves, and you receive that location’s Mayan Stone.

You know it worked when the outline snaps into place and the stone is added to your count. If nothing happens, the outline is not yet matched to the ground objects, so keep adjusting the rotation and size.

Why Tulum needs all 16 Mayan Stones

The sealed door inside Tulum only opens after you have collected every Mayan Stone. There are 16 stelae across the Caribbean, split between northern and southern locations, and the Tulum pillar is one of them. Solving the Tulum stele alone will not open the temple.

Note: Two of these stelae are tied to the main story, including your very first Mayan Stone during Sequence 04: This Old Cove at Great Inagua. The remaining pillars are scattered across islands you reach through exploration.

Tulum temple reward

Once all 16 Mayan Stones are in hand, travel back to the Assassin stronghold in Tulum and interact with the ancient door to open a pathway. Inside, a short bit of platforming takes you up to the raised tower in the middle, where two rewards wait.

Reaching the tower and claiming both items confirms the Mayan Mysteries quest is complete. The Tulum stele is a small piece of that chain, but the stronghold itself is where the quest both begins and finally pays out.
