Every hero in DragonSword: Awakening earns its place through combat, not gacha pulls. You unlock characters with Fate Invitations from story progress, and the game hides a hero’s kit until after you spend one. That makes knowing who pays off first a real advantage, especially when you are deciding where to sink skill points, crafted gear, and Familiar pairings. The ranking below sorts all 19 launch heroes by how well they stack Status Ailments, how much damage their tag combos produce, and how easy they are to pilot.
Quick answer: Lute, Aria, Castella, and Dana are the strongest all-round picks and the safest first Fate Invitations. If you want a hero who generates combo gauge from your very first fight, Lute is the lowest-risk choice.
DragonSword: Awakening tier list (all 19 heroes)
This ranking reflects the launch-week meta as of July 2026, before the Rift System and the four post-launch heroes arrive. Placements weigh four things: how well a hero’s Status Ailment chains into others for Signal Skills, raw damage from combos and Switching Signals, effectiveness across dungeons, bosses, and exploration, and how simple the optimal rotation is to execute.
| Tier | Heroes | Why they land here |
|---|---|---|
| S | Lute, Aria, Castella, Dana | Best ailment coverage, highest combo potential, work in almost any team |
| A | Roxy, Johnny, Kalien, Alex, Theresia, Ornette | Excellent in a defined role and strong when paired with an S-tier partner |
| B | Tarte, Kalsion, Renia, Eileen, Cerese, Othello | Viable but situational; need the right team to shine |
| C | Charlotte | High skill ceiling; rewards heavy investment and precise play |

These four cover the widest range of content and give the best return on your upgrade materials. They apply their ailments reliably, feed the tag combo gauge quickly, and rarely need a specific team around them to perform.
Lute is the protagonist and the most beginner-friendly pick. Stun Slash locks a target down while dealing damage, Healing Circle pulls you and allies out of trouble, Sword Grab turns a captured enemy into a weapon, and Relic Fall lands heavy AoE damage on a good read. Few real downsides make her a strong long-term build.
Aria is a versatile ranged option built around explosive bombs. Her Switch-On ability lets you time detonations for control, and she can fall back on straightforward bolt attacks when you want steady poke. She slots into a team early and stays useful.
Dana is the summoner, built around Frost. She calls the ice golem Chako, which fights as a second body, pulls aggro with heavy hits, applies Frost, and can flip into a shield to soak damage while Dana keeps casting. That constant second attacker is why she rewards players who normally avoid summoners.
Castella rounds out the top tier with broad ailment coverage and clean combo access, making her a dependable core piece rather than a niche specialist.
A-tier: role specialists that rival the top
A-tier heroes are excellent inside their lane and can match S-tier output in the right composition. If a team is built around their ailment, several of these outperform their placement.
Theresia is one of the standout melee fighters. Her chained flails have huge reach, so almost every swing catches multiple enemies. You switch between Consecration, which upgrades her chain for a window, and Celestial Verdict, a jumping slam that lands a Stun shockwave, giving her both Bleed and Stun. Learning to combine the two takes practice, but she is punishing against groups and single targets alike.
Roxy is the easiest ranged hero to master and unusually mobile for an archer. Crimson Spiral dashes through enemies to apply Bleed, and Bloody Shower plants her for a rapid arrow burst that spreads Bleed down a line. She stays aggressive without standing still.
Ornette applies Shock with both active abilities. Holy Cross hits hard on raw attack power, while Holy Circle raises her critical damage by 30%, which pushes her burst combos noticeably higher. Kalien is the Fire caster, sending fiery fox spirits to swarm and detonate Burn. Her kit is simple to read but the fox movement paths take practice to route well.
Alex is the honest sword-and-shield pick, built around Knockdown, active guard frames, and Guard Stance counters. He leans defensive, so he shines for players who prefer blocking over dodging. Johnny fills out the tier as a solid role fighter with dependable team synergy.

B-tier: viable with the right team
These heroes are situational rather than weak. Give them a supporting composition and several become strong picks.
Eileen carries a long halberd and applies Airborne through Barging Spear, while her Brave One banner buffs her and nearby allies. Her reach and speed make her a comfortable Airborne setup hero. Renia is the strongest pure juggle starter here; both her openers, Rising Cutter and Wind Slayer, trigger Airborne, and her kit is beginner-friendly for aerial combos.
Kalsion, the King, is a melee powerhouse whose weapon Blaze fires fire energy and raises his attack with Flame Wave, plus shockwave finishers in a radius. Cerese excels in Frost-focused teams, where Ice Storm controls enemy movement and Frozen Spike adds damage, Frost, and Airborne, but she does not fit most other lineups.
Tarte works a magic tome for Shock with a small heal, but her damage depends on chaining Lightning Shock and Bolt Bubble, which makes her situational. Othello is a Knockdown-heavy attacker with a strong niche build once you have the team support to enable it.
C-tier: Charlotte and the skill-ceiling gap
Charlotte is a fast assassin who applies Poison, Airborne, and Knockdown, so she fills the tag combo gauge quickly. Her clone drops a decoy that pulls aggro while she repositions, and Poison Dagger launches her into the air to rain projectiles. Her Airborne chains extend further than most, which allows unusually long juggles. The catch is execution. She needs precise play and dedicated investment to reach her ceiling, which is why she sits low despite genuinely high potential in skilled hands.
Note: tier and personal results can diverge sharply here. Because all 19 heroes come with the base purchase, you can build and test any of them freely, and skill plus team synergy often outweighs a raw tier placement.
How unlocking and investment work
DragonSword: Awakening is a buy-to-play action RPG at $29.99 with no gacha and no redemption codes. Every hero is earned through play, so tier placement really guides where your finite early resources go. You receive your first Fate Invitation early, then more through story progression, and you spend them in the exchange tab. Some heroes also join automatically as the main story introduces them. You can confirm the release and pricing on the official Steam store page.
Two mechanics raise every hero’s value and reward multi-ailment picks. You can start a long skill animation, then immediately switch out so the first hero keeps attacking while the second joins, briefly giving you two active fighters. On large enemies and some bosses, a grab prompt latches a hero on; switch away and that hero keeps hitting from the boss’s body while your new one attacks from the ground.
Expect the tiers to move after launch
This is a launch-week snapshot, and Hound13 has confirmed four more heroes, Ryza, Jerome, Veronica, and Logan, arriving free later as post-launch content. The Rift System is also planned to follow, and content that rewards different ailments or team shapes can lift lower-tier heroes quickly. Balance patches will do the same. Treat the ranking as a starting point for your first few Fate Invitations, then let your own combos and team synergy decide the rest.
