The Curse of the Allflame update pushes most of its love toward Lightning Spells, which leaves melee in a comfortable spot for a fresh start. On top of that, the reworked gem socket system removes color matching entirely, so any Skill Gem now drops into any Equipment Socket. That single change makes melee gear far easier to assemble early, since you no longer brick a weapon or chest trying to force off-color links.
Quick answer: For the smoothest one-button start, run Shockwave Cyclone Slayer. If you want maximum survivability while learning the new Voyage mechanics, pick Boneshatter Juggernaut or an Earthshatter slam build. Choose Dual Strike or Elemental Hit Slayer if single-target damage and mapping speed matter more to you.

Best melee league-starter builds compared
Each of these builds keeps a low gear barrier and a clear first-upgrade path. Use the table to match a build to how you want to play, then read the notes below for the exact skill and Ascendancy setup.
| Build | Main skill | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Shockwave Cyclone Slayer | Cyclone + Shockwave | One-button clear, strong leech |
| Boneshatter Juggernaut | Boneshatter of Complex Trauma | Extreme tankiness |
| Dual Strike Gladiator / Slayer | Dual Strike of Ambidexterity | High single-target, cheap weapons |
| Elemental Hit Slayer | Elemental Hit | Fast mapping with explosions |

Add to Google Preferences →Shockwave Cyclone Slayer: the low-stress one-button pick
The core here is Cyclone linked with Shockwave Support for extra area damage, while you hold a single button and walk through packs. Add General’s Cry linked to Autoexertion so warcries fire automatically, and slot Ground Slam of Earthshaking for a second layer of DPS. Cyclone drains mana quickly, so build in enough mana regeneration to keep the spin going without stalling.
Slayer is the Ascendancy of choice because its Life Leech keeps you healthy while you sit on top of enemies and ground effects. You also take no Reflected Physical Damage, so your own hits can’t kill you, and Culling Strike finishes anything at 20% health or lower. A documented 3.29 version of this build rebuilt its levelling loadouts and passive pathing, using Static Strike before the Cyclone and General’s Cry setup comes online.
Boneshatter Juggernaut: the tankiest progression
Boneshatter applies a stacking buff called Trauma that raises both the damage you deal and the damage you take. Running Boneshatter of Complex Trauma pushes this further, granting up to 200% additional damage per Trauma stack as you improve gem quality. The higher incoming damage sounds risky, but Juggernaut is built to absorb it.
The Unbreakable passive doubles your armour, and stacking Endurance Charges adds Physical and Elemental damage reduction on top. The Untiring passive then heals you when you take physical damage, so heavy hits partly refund themselves. With armour and charges cutting the damage first, the healing outweighs what actually lands. This is the build to run if you want to explore the seafloor Voyage content without worrying about surprise deaths.
Dual Strike builds: cheap weapons, strong single-target
Dual Strike of Ambidexterity is a new Transfigured Gem in 3.29 that changes how the skill calculates damage. It requires two different melee weapon types equipped at once, dealing damage from your main-hand weapon while using the attack speed of your off-hand weapon. That lets you run a slow, high-damage main-hand next to a fast, low-damage off-hand, and because such off-hands mostly just need attack speed, they stay cheap in the early economy.
There are two solid Ascendancy directions. A Gladiator setup leans on Gratuitous Violence for Bleed Explosions, uses Leap Slam and stacked area of effect for map clear, and gains attack speed and Life Leech from a Claw in the off-hand. A Slayer setup instead pairs a high-physical main-hand such as Mark of the Doubting Knight with the Masterful Form notable, which sets your maximum Endurance Charges equal to your maximum Frenzy Charges for strong mitigation. Add Spell Suppression for defense, then Impact plus Melee Splash Support to widen your attack coverage.
Elemental Hit Slayer: fast mapping with a fix for wasted damage
Elemental Hit randomly picks Fire, Cold, or Lightning on each hit, and only that element deals damage. Left alone, that randomness wastes a chunk of your investment. The fix is to equip two Combat Focus unique jewels of the two elements you don’t want, which forces Elemental Hit to deal a single damage type. From there you can scale one element cleanly.
Slayer again handles survivability through Leech, with added damage from Hits and Ailments. Take the Impact notable to boost the explosions Elemental Hit produces, which speeds up clearing dense packs. This is the melee option to pick when mapping throughput is your main goal.
Earthshatter as a proven backup
If you want a route that does not depend on any newly introduced gem, Earthshatter remains a reliable slam framework and avoided direct nerfs in 3.29. It creates spikes when you attack, then a Warcry detonates them for a second wave of high damage. The Autoexertion Support gem casts the Warcry for you, so you mostly hold the slam button and let the explosion cycle run. It scales through basic two-handed physical weapon upgrades, which makes its damage path easy to plan. Both Juggernaut and Berserker are common Ascendancy choices, with Juggernaut favouring raw tankiness.
How to pick and when to upgrade
All of these builds level through the campaign without chase uniques, but you still need to track a few upgrades. For the slam builds, the biggest jump comes from a better physical weapon. For Dual Strike, prioritise a fast off-hand and a hard-hitting main-hand. For Elemental Hit, secure your two Combat Focus jewels early so your damage stops being split. Cap your Elemental Resistances and set a Life or defensive floor before you judge any build purely on how fast it clears.
The safest approach is to keep two or three of these in mind, then commit once you have played a few zones and know which playstyle feels right. A one-button leech build like Shockwave Cyclone and a tanky slam build like Boneshatter or Earthshatter cover very different failure points, so pairing one of each as a starter and a backup gives you room to adjust as the new economy settles.
