Fortnite Speeds Up the Storm and Removes Triangle Circles in the July 27 Hotfix

Late-game circles now close faster, triangle storms are gone, and the Guardian Shield takes a heavy nerf.

Late-game circles now close faster, triangle storms are gone, and the Guardian Shield takes a heavy nerf.

Fortnite endgames feel quicker as of July 27, 2026. Epic Games pushed a hotfix that tightens how the storm behaves in the closing phases of a Battle Royale match, cuts down the time you have to rotate late, and pulls the recently added triangle-shaped storms out of rotation. The change lands alongside a broad set of weapon and loot tweaks, plus a heavy reduction to the Guardian Shield’s defensive power.

Quick answer: Storm circles now close faster in the later phases only. Early-game pacing is unchanged, phases 2–5 are about 7–20% smaller, wait time is cut by 98 seconds and closing time by 50 seconds, and triangle storms are disabled. Matches can end around 2 minutes 30 seconds sooner.

What changed with the Fortnite storm

The core of this update is pacing. The storm starts closing more aggressively once a match moves past its opening stretch, so the safe zone shrinks toward its final points with less breathing room than before. If you rely on last-second rotations to survive the endgame, you now have a narrower window to make them.

Storm detailNew behavior
Wait timeReduced by 98 seconds
Closing timeReduced by 50 seconds
Phase 2–5 circle sizeAbout 7–20% smaller
Triangle-shaped stormsDisabled
Early-game pacingUnchanged
Competitive playlistsUnchanged for now
Overall match lengthUp to ~2:30 shorter

Triangle storms first arrived on December 12, 2025, adding an unusual shape that made late rotations harder to read. That experiment is now over, and circles behave in the more predictable pattern players are used to, just faster.

Epic is treating the speed-up as an active trial rather than a permanent change. The studio is directly asking players whether the new pacing feels better and whether late rotations still stay doable, with senior design director Ted Timmins noting the timings can be tuned down if the community pushes back. Expect further storm adjustments in the following weeks as more match data comes in.

Guardian Shield nerf

The Guardian Shield loses a large chunk of its staying power. At full charge it now drains far quicker, and it recharges much more slowly, which limits how often you can lean on it during a fight.

Guardian Shield statBeforeAfter
Duration at full charge20 seconds10 seconds
Recharge delay5 seconds8 seconds

The item had become a common tool for stalling into the endgame, so Epic is pulling back its defensive value. A buff is not on the table until the related exploits are addressed.

Weapon buffs and nerfs

Several guns shift in viability with this hotfix. Standard pistols spawn far less often, while Bank Shot Pistols are both easier to find and stronger to use.

WeaponChanges
Surgical Burst RifleCommon damage +1, Uncommon–Mythic damage +2, ADS accuracy +5–6%, sprinting accuracy +5%, reloads ~8% slower, Mythic fire rate 15 → 14
Warforged ARFire rate 7.2 → 7.3, reloads 5% faster, ADS accuracy +5%, airborne/sprinting/sustained accuracy +~17%
Bank Shot PistolDamage +7%, damage to builds +5–6%, bounce multiplier 1.6x → 1.5x
Harley Quinn MythicClose damage 28 → 27, mid-to-long range +0.1
Poison Ivy pistolDamage reduced by 3%
Catwoman Rapid Fire SMGMagazine size increased to 27

Normal assault rifles are being rebalanced, so expect continued tuning to that category across the rest of the season.

Loot and item adjustments

  • Pistol spawn rates are reduced, while Bank Shot Pistols show up more frequently.
  • Shock Rocks now drop in stacks of 2, with a reduced max stack of 4, and cost 150 Gold Bars in Zero Build lobbies.
  • Cluster Clingers now drop in stacks of 2 instead of 1.
  • Pocket Med-Mist Smoke has been replaced by Spicy Ice Cream in Zero Build vending machines, where Port-A-Cover is also available.

All of these tweaks are live in the battle royale right now, so your next few matches will already feel the difference in both pacing and loadout balance. Because the storm speed-up is a trial, the exact timings could still move as Epic weighs player feedback, but for now late-game fights arrive faster and the triangle storm era is finished.
