Genshin Impact is borrowing one of the most recognizable social ideas from Dark Souls. When Version 7.0 opens the frozen nation of Snezhnaya, you will be able to leave short messages for other players inside the world itself, marking a path, flagging a puzzle, or warning about what lies ahead without ever teaming up.
Quick answer: You cannot type free text. You build each message by combining preset words from three tabs, Expressions, Adjectives, and Nouns, and you can attach the note to an object or point in the environment.
How the player message system works
The system mirrors the asynchronous notes that made Dark Souls famous. You leave a message in your own world, and it can surface in someone else’s game as a hint, a joke, or a misdirection. Nobody enters your session and nobody sees your live progress, so it stays low-pressure and optional.

Instead of a text box, the message maker gives you a set of word categories. You piece a sentence together from those fixed options, so every note you see was assembled from the same shared vocabulary. That structure is what keeps messages readable in any language and blocks the kind of open typing HoYoverse wants to avoid.

The three word categories
| Tab | What it does |
|---|---|
| Expressions | Sets the phrasing or reaction that frames the note |
| Adjectives | Describes the object, enemy, or situation |
| Nouns | Names the thing you are pointing at, and can mark an object or spot in the environment |
Because you can tag a specific object or location, a message can point directly at a hidden chest, a switch, or a tricky jump rather than sitting as a generic sign on the ground.

Snezhnaya is built around a dense map full of new puzzles and hidden secrets, and the message system is designed to plug into that exploration. Community-written hints can nudge other players toward a solution or, just as easily, raise the challenge by pointing them the wrong way.
The Dark Souls lineage was obvious to players the moment it was shown, and the memes started immediately. The classic “weak foe ahead” placed just before a tough boss is exactly the kind of prank the word-based format invites.
The rest of the 7.0 social push
Player messages are part of a wider social expansion in the update. Snezhnaya also introduces player trading, and a free constellations event is being stocked with nine new characters. Together these additions fill in social systems the game has long gone without.
Version 7.0, titled “Everwinter Without Mercy,” arrives on August 12, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and mobile. It opens the long-awaited nation of Cryo, adds the Cryo Traveler, and debuts five-star Odette alongside the free four-star Alyosha, plus a new third-person shooting mode tied to the region.
For a feature Genshin Impact has resisted for years, the message board is a small change with a large personality. It turns solo exploration of Snezhnaya into a quiet conversation with everyone else wandering the same snow, whether they are trying to help you or lead you off a cliff.
