Beast of Reincarnation: How to Get the Red Key in Chapter 1

The Red Key is handed to you automatically during the “Toward the Nushi’s Lair” quest, but you have to reach Subcity 3 first.

The Red Key in Beast of Reincarnation is a story item, not a hidden pickup. You cannot stumble onto it by exploring, and you cannot open the locked red door in the Abandoned Village until you have it. It arrives during Chapter 1, and the trigger is tied to a specific point in the main quest.

Quick answer: Defeat the Rangifer Nushi, rest at the Cleanse Walker, then follow the “Toward the Nushi’s Lair” quest to Subcity 3. Open the underground hatch, reach the campsite, and the Retired Gatekeeper Golem hands you the Red Key in a cutscene.

What you need to do before the Red Key unlocks

The key becomes available only after you clear the first major fight in the Ogouchi Buffer Zone. Rushing ahead does nothing until this sequence is done.

Beat the Rangifer Nushi, the first boss of the game. You drop into its arena in the north of the Chapter 1 map, and defeating it moves the quest forward.

Play through the flashback that starts automatically after the fight. You control Emma back in the Ogouchi Colony, and you progress it by hunting down the Malefacts, which also covers the day she met Koo.
Once the flashback ends, you return to the present at the Cleanse Walker. Rest in your bed to end the day. When you wake up, head back out into the wilderness to pick up the next objective.

How to reach Subcity 3 and collect the Red Key

After resting, the quest updates to send you to Subcity 3 and find a way into the Nushi’s Lair. The entrance sits on the north side, above the Rangifer arena, near the center of the map, roughly 640 meters from the Cleanse Walker. Expect plenty of enemies along the way, so move carefully.

Follow the objective marker to the Subcity 3 entrance. When you arrive, look for the rotating lever, or crank, on the surface.

Turn the crank to reveal a hidden metal trapdoor. Go through it and follow the ramp all the way down into the underground area.
At the bottom you reach a campsite with a large sealed door in front of you. Approach the door on the left. A cutscene triggers in which the Retired Gatekeeper, a Golem sitting beside the door, speaks to Emma.

Let the conversation finish. At the end, the Gatekeeper hands over the Red Key automatically. There is no fight or puzzle required to receive it.

You will know it worked when the quest changes to Path to the Sealed Lair, listing three objectives: obtain the Red Key, the Blue Key, and the Yellow Key. The Gatekeeper marks the Blue and Yellow Key locations on your map so you can track them down next.

What the Red Key unlocks

The Red Key has two uses. One pushes the story forward, and the other is an optional side reward you can grab whenever you like.

DoorRequired?Reward
Nushi’s Lair gate (Subcity 3)YesStory progression once all three keys are collected
Locked room in the Abandoned VillageOptionalStrongbox with 558x Amber and an Ancient Book (Common)

The Red Key alone will not open the Nushi’s Lair gate. You need the Blue and Yellow Keys as well before the door will budge. That makes the Gatekeeper cutscene the start of a small key hunt rather than the end of one.

The optional door is in the Abandoned Village near where Chapter 1 began. It sits to the left of the talking Rusted Golem that first pointed you toward the Subcities. Unlock it, head up the stairs, and open the Strongbox inside. There is nothing else in the building, so you can leave once you have the loot.

Can you miss the Red Key?

No. Because the Red Key is granted through the main quest, it cannot be permanently missed. If you have found the locked red door but not the key, you simply have not reached the Subcity 3 cutscene yet. Check your quest log, finish the current objectives, and keep following the path toward the Nushi’s Lair until the Gatekeeper hands it over.

Grabbing the Abandoned Village Strongbox before you open the lair is the tidiest approach, since it saves you a return trip once all three keys are in hand and you are ready to move deeper into Chapter 1.
