The Rake is a fast, red-glowing predator that hunts you during regular shifts in Shift At Midnight, and unlike most threats it does not wait for the Hunt to start. It runs on all fours, closes distance quickly, and pushes toward the shop to attack your customers. Kill it before it arrives, or you lose sales and start bleeding profit.
Quick answer: Rakes only spawn in Post-Story Endless Mode. Watch for customers shrieking, spot the red glow near the forest, then focus all your fire on the Rake and drop it before it reaches the shop. It dodges and kites when shot, so commit fully and do not split attention.
Where Rakes appear in Shift At Midnight
Rakes are locked to Post-Story Endless Mode, so you will never meet one while working through Story Mode. Endless Mode is the survival gauntlet that opens after you finish the campaign, where each shift gets harder until you finally fail.
They spawn from the forest surrounding the gas station. That is the same treeline where the solo Doppelganger stands and stares at you in Story Mode, but the Rake behaves nothing like that passive NPC. It is an intelligent enemy that actively tries to break into the shop and cause damage.
How Rakes change a normal shift
Ordinarily, shifts are calm. The usual worst case is a Doppelganger swiping at players in the aisles, and most monsters only show up during the Hunt after you let a Doppelganger flee, which leads into a fight against the large arachnid known as The Entity and the creatures that come with it.
The Rake removes that safety. With one on the map, even an otherwise quiet shift becomes dangerous, so you cannot ignore it at any point. Its key traits make it easy to identify once you know what to look for.
| Trait | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Spawns from the forest | Threats come from outside the store, near the treeline |
| Sprints on all fours | It closes the gap fast, so you have little reaction time |
| Glows red | Easy to pick out visually at night |
| Customers shriek | Your audio cue that a Rake has appeared |
| Targets the shop | It scares off and kills customers, cutting your profit |
How to deal with a Rake
Note: In co-op this is far easier to handle. One player can call out the Rake and track it while another lines up the kill, which reduces the chance of it kiting past everyone and slipping into the shop.
How you know it worked
You have handled the Rake correctly when it goes down before reaching the store and your customers stop shrieking. If a Rake makes it to the shop and starts killing customers, that shift’s profit takes the hit, which matters even more in Endless Mode where survival and points stack over increasingly hard shifts.
The most common failure is treating a Rake like a background threat. It is agile, it kites your shots, and it does not respect the calm-shift rules the rest of the game runs on, so the moment you hear that shriek, drop everything and put it down.
