Hidden Cubes are small reward chests scattered across the open world of Aion 2. They never show up on the map or minimap, they vanish the moment one player opens them, and the ones on the launch maps all demand a key before they give anything up. Knowing where they hide and what you need in your bag is the difference between walking past a cube and claiming it.
Quick answer: Hunt for cubes in high, tucked-away spots by following their faint chime, then open red cubes with a Key: Hidden Cube. In Verteron and Altgard, every cube is key-only, so carry keys before you go looking.

Red cubes versus gold cubes
There are two kinds of Hidden Cube, and the type decides whether you spend a key. A red cube shows the line “Cannot open without a key.” and gives you a single button to open it. A gold cube can be opened for free, though it tends to pay out less than the red version.
Which type appears depends entirely on the map. On the two maps live in the global version, every cube is the key-only red type. Free gold cubes only turn up on the later field maps.
| Map | Faction | Hidden Cubes | Key needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verteron | Elyos | 95 | Yes, every cube |
| Altgard | Asmodian | 59 | Yes, every cube |
| Eltnen | Elyos | 26 | Free when the gold version spawns |
| Morheim | Asmodian | 26 | Free when the gold version spawns |
That works out to 154 cubes across Verteron and Altgard, and 206 once Eltnen and Morheim are counted. Eltnen and Morheim arrived with the Chapter 1 update for levels 45 to 50 and are live in Korea and Taiwan, but not in the global version as of October 2026. For most players right now, that means free cube opening is off the table and the key is the real limit.

A cube can appear almost anywhere, but it follows a few consistent rules. It won’t sit out in the open along auto-path routes, it won’t float in mid-air, and it stays away from monster packs. Instead it tucks into the edges of a zone, which is why cliff faces and ledges are the first places to check.
- Cliff tops, rock faces, narrow ledges and elevated corners
- Small caves, hollows and openings off the main path
- Floating rock platforms and the corners of hanging structures
- Riverbeds and lakeshores, where a handful of cubes sit in or near water
- Rooftops, ruins and spots far from heavily trafficked areas
Across the 206 spawn groups, 15 have the water-type cube: Verteron has 8, Altgard has 3, and Eltnen and Morheim have 2 each. If you find nothing on land near a river, get into the water and search the surface.
With 95 cubes, Verteron has the highest count and is the fullest map to sweep. A cube may spawn at any of several candidate locations, not at one fixed point; one player might find it tucked behind a ruin, while another spots it on a riverbank.

Use sound to pinpoint a cube
Because cubes never appear on the map, your ears do most of the work. A cube gives off a faint shimmering chime, similar to the sound an Empyrean Trace feather makes, and you can hear it before you see the cube. Setting up your audio makes this far more reliable.

Some ambient objects, like the angel statue near Spirit’s Rest in Verteron, make a jingling sound close to a cube’s chime. Don’t assume every chime is a cube until you spot it.
Opening a Hidden Cube and getting keys
Finding a cube is just the first part. Interact with it to start a channel of about four seconds; while it runs, the screen displays “Opening the Hidden Cube…”. Once the channel ends, the rewards appear, and you can collect them using the interact key. A red cube requires a Key: Hidden Cube before it will open, and the key is consumed when used.
Each cube allows a single interaction and then despawns, so only the first player to open it gets the loot. In a busy zone, that turns cube hunting into a race, and you need both the key and the reach to beat anyone else to it.
The key is bound, stacks to 100, and can’t be traded. It comes from several places:
- Daeva Pass / Battle pass
- Duty quests, which refresh daily and often list a key as a reward
- Other quests and achievements
- Monolith progression
- Vendor shops, the Season Shop and the market
- Sealed dungeons and daily login rewards
The Season Shop lists keys at 3,000 Oath Coin each, capped at 10 per account, and that listing runs until December 16, 2026. Duty quests and the recurring sources are what keep you topped up over time, since fixed quest and achievement rewards alone fall well short of the 154 key-only cubes on the global maps. If you are stacking keys for a specific hunt, skip red cubes you don’t mean to open, because each key clears only one.
As soon as a player opens a cube, it disappears, so waiting to claim it could mean losing your chance. If you have a key and want the reward, open it immediately.

What a Hidden Cube drops
Cubes pay out mostly consumables and crafting materials, with the odd rarer find. The contents change from cube to cube, and a key boosts the cube’s energy for a better reward table. Common items include Soul Crystal for Genus Insight, Soul Codex for Soul Binding, Silentium, Seed of Detection and Power Shard. Odyle Energy, manastones, pet souls and skins also show up.
Radiant Love Wings are among the rarer drops, with a Unique grade and a drop rate in the low single digits. Equipped, they grant Defense Bonus 400, Evasion Bonus 35, Natural MP Regen 90, and HP Potion Recovery increase 5.5%.
The game shows you the reward list before you commit. The opening window splits rewards into common drops and key-opening drops, each with its own percentage, so it is worth reading the first time you open one.

Respawns and confirming the open
You know an open worked when the channel completes, the loot drops, and the cube disappears. Opening one also counts toward the “Open a Hidden Cube” battle pass objective, worth +50 points, so expect that progress to tick up as well.
There is no fixed respawn timer. A limited number of cubes exist on a map at once, and opening one causes another to appear elsewhere. Reports from the longer-running Korean version put the gap anywhere from 30 minutes to three hours, and cubes rarely return to the exact spot you cleared. Clear a cube, drop a map pin if you want to track the area, and keep moving to the next chime.
