ArcheAge Chronicles is XLGAMES’ online action RPG set in Auroria. It began life as ArcheAge 2 and is built on Unreal Engine 5. Its Steam Next Fest demo on PC is a real slice of the game, not a vertical-slice teaser. It starts with a story prologue, moves into a boss-capped tutorial dungeon, and then opens up into the coastal region of Diamond Shores. There you can craft potions, hunt animals, chase bounties, and clear a pirate cave before the build ends at a dungeon rift on the Cliffs of Madness.
Quick answer: The demo runs from the Shadows of Memory prologue and the Herald Knight boss to the Blurred Boundaries instance. It includes four classes, twelve weapons, and roughly 45 minutes of story content.
ArcheAge Chronicles demo content, start to finish
The demo opens with a cinematic voiced in Korean with English subtitles. It tells how Auroria fell to Rancor and was saved by Nui, a name that comes back later as the statues that anchor your respawns. After that comes the title screen, a Terms of Use prompt, and server selection.

From there the build moves through a tight, linear tutorial and then a wider open-world stretch. In order, it covers these segments:
| Segment | Location | Ends with |
|---|---|---|
| Prologue dungeon | Recalling Grounds | Herald Knight boss |
| Arrival and first quests | Watchtower of Hope | Pirate’s Scimitar reward |
| Life skills intro | Fields near the village | Lifeflow Potions, Raw Meat |
| World encounter | Lost Docks | Pallatius the Severer |
| Pirate questline | Seaglass Beach, Pirate Hideout | Aventus boss |
| Final stretch | Cliffs of Madness | Blurred Boundaries instance |
The tutorial portion takes about ten minutes once character creation is done. The rest of the demo’s playtime goes to Diamond Shores, so most of what you see is open-world content rather than hand-held onboarding.

Add to Google Preferences →Classes and weapons available in the demo
Four classes are available from the start, and each one has three weapon disciplines. You carry two weapons at once and swap between them mid-fight with the Q key, so a class is really a pool of weapons to pair rather than a fixed kit.
| Class | Weapons |
|---|---|
| Warrior | Longsword, Greatsword, Gladius |
| Ranger | Hatchet, Longbow, Crossbow |
| Berserker | Axe, Warhammer, Greatshield |
| Mage | Elemental Staff, Wavesword, Vitality Staff |
The Mage is the best-documented class in the demo. It opens with an Elemental Staff, and Vadim hands over a Pirate’s Scimitar (a Wavesword) after the first quest briefing at the Watchtower of Hope. That pairing mixes ranged elemental spells like Fire Blast, Lightning Pillar and Mana Barrage with close-range Wavesword moves such as Wave Slash, Tidal Slash and Glacial Arc. Blink acts as the Mage’s mobility tool.
ArcheAge Chronicles character creator
The character creator in the demo is a complete suite. You can pick a preset and then change voice lines, costume gear, skin tone, facial geometry, hair, makeup, and body proportions using individual sliders. Elf-like pointed ears are available. A full pass through the editor can easily take five minutes or more if you go slider by slider.

Your creation shows up in shared spaces. Hub areas like the Watchtower of Hope include other players’ characters with their own looks and classes, so the creator does more than set up a single-player avatar.
Shadows of Memory prologue and the Herald Knight
The story opens with a boat. An NPC named Vadim rows your unconscious character through fog toward the Recalling Grounds. You wake up on the shoreline and the Shadows of Memory quest begins, with movement prompts and the HUD introduced as you go.

The dungeon teaches combat in layers. First it covers light and heavy attacks and elemental casting against shades. Next it introduces guard breaks, where heavy attacks crack shielded undead. A short swim through a flooded passage leads to a Bound Prowler mini-boss, which takes you to Level 2 and opens the stat screen for the first time. Beyond the temple’s stone doors, phantom waves and the Recalling Grounds Herald stand in front of an altar. There you speak with the Shard of Recollection and ask it three questions about your past.
The Herald Knight is the prologue’s final boss. It’s an armored enemy with an oversized broadsword, and it fills the arena with purple hazards you need to dodge. Watch for red telegraph lines and circles, which mark fatal attacks that can’t be blocked.

The prologue concludes when the knight fades away, leaving a floating Shard of Recollection that attaches to your palm. A flashback then reveals a settlement in flames and figures connected to memories the protagonist has lost. The boat then takes you onward to the Watchtower of Hope.

Diamond Shores open world: Nui Statues, crafting and hunting
Once you’ve rested in Vadim’s barn, the Auroria World Map unlocks. It shows Diamond Shores and Whaleswell Gulf, and labels nearby waters including Lucent Sound and Maelstrom Channel. The demo is set in Diamond Shores, which includes the Watchtower of Hope, Wayfaring Camp, Lost Fishing Village, Lost Docks, Seaglass Beach, and the Cliffs of Madness.
Nui Statues
Each Nui Statue has two jobs. Awakening one sets it as your respawn point, and it also becomes a fast-travel node you can pick from the World Map. The demo has statues at the Watchtower of Hope, at Wayfaring Camp, and inside the Pirate Hideout just before the Aventus fight.
Potion crafting
Hunter Herlei introduces crafting through the Starter Recipe quest. You collect Roseberries in the fields and brew Lifeflow Potions at an outdoor cauldron, picking the recipe from the Food crafting list. Each batch costs 9 Roseberries plus a 125 gold crafting fee. A Vigoflow Potion also appears among the demo’s items.

Hunting and butchering
The First Hunt quest follows. Herlei gives you a Hunting Knife, which goes into an equipment or tool slot. Defeated animals such as wild boars, mountain goats, and alligator turtles can then be butchered with the F prompt, which plays a skinning animation and yields Raw Meat or Bone Chips. Merchant Denzel at Wayfaring Camp gives bone-gathering tasks that rely on this system.
The village board also has Wanted posters for two fugitives, Dirk and Gartez. Hersander’s Tower holds a stele puzzle that needs a Soul Stone to activate. Neither one is resolved during the demo’s main route.
Character progression: Core Abilities and Trait Points
Progression runs on two separate tracks. Leveling up gives Core Ability points, which you spend across six stats:
- Strength
- Agility
- Constitution
- Intelligence
- Talent
- Endurance
Stat points are locked in once you confirm them, so there’s no free respec in the demo.
Trait Points come from leveling and from interacting with shrines in the world. You spend them in per-weapon trait trees. In the Wavesword tree, they unlock active abilities and passive bonuses, so the second weapon you equip grows separately from the first. The character sheet also lists HP, SP, ATK, DEF, Physical FIN, and Magic FIN as derived stats.
Pirate Hideout, Aventus and where the demo stops
The final quest chain begins in the Lost Fishing Village. Jennifer asks you to find her husband Renald, who was taken by pirates. Before that, an elite bandit named Pallatius the Severer waits at the Lost Docks and pushes you to Level 4. The pirate camp on Seaglass Beach leads to a fortified cave. Inside, Aventus and his armed crew fight you together on a wooden platform underground.
Beating Aventus unlocks chests holding the Pillager set, including Pillager’s Hat, Pillager’s Light Armor, Pillager’s Gloves, and Pillager’s Elemental Staff. An underwater tunnel leads you to Renald, who says Officer Edward went deeper into the mountain. That’s where the demo ends. A purple rift on the Cliffs of Madness opens into Blurred Boundaries, an instance that supports both group and solo play and overlooks a hidden pirate galleon dock.
ArcheAge Chronicles demo platforms, servers and version
The Steam Next Fest demo is live now, and you can download it from the ArcheAge Chronicles Steam page. The build shown runs version v26.10.18.734. It offers servers in Asia, EU-West, and NA, and the demo above was played on EU-West 01.
The full game is also listed for wishlisting on the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with cross-platform play as a stated goal. XLGAMES plans to sell it as buy-to-play with optional microtransactions. Life skills like housing, farming, trade runs, and guild towns, which are central to the original ArcheAge, aren’t part of the demo yet. The PC build focuses on combat, crafting, and a single region, and it’s the clearest look so far at how those systems work in practice.
