Upper Skylands hosts two bosses that can appear in an awakened state, and each one requires you to do something to the island before the fight will start. Sky Warlord and Lightning God replaced Wysper and Thunder God in Update 30, and their awakened versions are tied to the Island Secrets system that rolls once an hour in the First Sea. You cannot force either spawn. You can only confirm when one is coming and be standing in the right place when it does.
Quick answer: Talk to the Secrets Master in Middle Town about 10 minutes before the hour ends to learn which island is next. If it says Upper Skylands, fly there and either destroy the black clouds over Sky Warlord’s area, or hit the Golden Bell five times matching the weapon icons it displays, to summon the awakened boss.
How awakened bosses spawn in the First Sea
Awakened Bosses arrived with Update 30 as part of Island Secrets. Every hour, one boss in the First Sea has a chance to awaken. The awakening does not happen on its own. A trigger sits on the island, usually a small minigame or an object you have to interact with, and the fight only begins once you complete it.
Beating an awakened boss gives you a free roll on the awakened boss spinner. That roll is the main reason to chase these fights rather than farming the normal versions.

The Secrets Master is an NPC in Middle Town, standing inside a safe zone where PvP is disabled. He tells you which island is next in line, which saves you from flying between islands hoping to catch a spawn.

Awaken Sky Warlord: Destroy the black clouds
Sky Warlord occupies the first area of Upper Skylands, the same spot the old Wysper boss used. The trigger here is entirely visual. The weather changes, clouds appear, and you break them.
Awaken Lightning God: Match the Golden Bell icons
Lightning God sits in the second area of Upper Skylands, at the far end of the island behind the large temple. Its awakening is an input-matching minigame rather than a weather event, and it is the one people get wrong most often.

Note: keep all three weapon types equipped before you start ringing the bell. Fumbling a swap mid-sequence is the usual reason the counter stalls.
Boss stats and trigger comparison
| Detail | Sky Warlord | Lightning God |
|---|---|---|
| Awakened level | 500 | 575 |
| Area | First area of Upper Skylands | Second area, behind the big temple |
| Trigger | Destroy the black clouds | Five matching hits on the Golden Bell |
| Trigger cue | Sky darkens, storm message appears | Weapon icons shown after first bell hit |
| Replaced | Wysper (Update 30) | Thunder God (Update 30) |
How to confirm the awakening worked
The clearest confirmation is the cutscene. Both triggers play one before the fight starts, and the boss nameplate afterwards reads “(Awakened)” alongside the level and the [Boss] tag. If the nameplate shows only the plain boss name, you are fighting the standard spawn and will not get a spinner roll.
After the kill, the awakened boss spinner opens on its own. Turning in the associated quest is a separate step, so do not leave the island until both the spin and the turn-in are done.
Why the awakening fails to start
- You were not standing on Upper Skylands when the hourly event fired. The Secrets Master’s warning exists because presence matters.
- The Secrets Master named a different island. Only one boss stirs per roll, and it is random.
- You hit the Golden Bell with the wrong attack type. The sequence needs five hits that match the icons shown.
- You cleared only some of the black clouds. Sky Warlord will not appear until all of them are destroyed.
Because the hourly roll picks one island at random, the practical routine is to check Middle Town near the end of each hour and only fly out when Upper Skylands comes up. That single dialogue line saves far more time than server hopping, and it puts you in position with enough of the countdown left to reach either the cloud spawn or the Golden Bell.
