Pet mutations in Build a Base and Steal raise both the sale value and the earning rate of any pet they attach to, which directly boosts your money per second. There are four of them right now, and each one comes from a specific source rather than a shared roll pool. Knowing which event or menu produces which mutation is the difference between chasing the right pet and wasting a roll.
Quick answer: Roll the Pet Roll for a chance at a Golden (1.5x) pet, join the Cosmic or Volcano events for Cosmic (2x) and Inferno (3x) pets, and play during an Admin Abuse event for the Admin (4x) mutation.
Every pet mutation and its multiplier
Each mutation applies a single flat multiplier to a pet’s sale value and its earning rate at the same time. The four mutations scale from Golden at the low end to Admin at the top, and the multiplier is the main thing that decides whether a pet is worth keeping in your base.

How to get each mutation
Mutations come from three separate sources, and there is no overlap between them. Golden is tied to the roll, Cosmic and Inferno are tied to two events, and Admin only appears during a special developer event.
Golden from the Pet Roll
Every time you use the Pet Roll, the pet you get has a random chance to spawn with the Golden mutation. This is the only mutation the Pet Roll can produce, and the roll cannot apply Cosmic, Inferno, or Admin. If you want Golden pets, repeated rolling is the path.
Cosmic and Inferno from events
Events spawn on their own while you play. Two of them apply mutations to the pets sitting in your base. The Cosmic Event has a chance to turn your placed pets Cosmic, and the Volcano Event has a chance to turn them Inferno.
The Volcano Event also gives you a guaranteed head start. You can grab one free Inferno pet by destroying the cage inside the Volcano. Any pets already placed in your base can additionally become Inferno while the event runs.
Admin from Admin Abuse events
The Admin mutation only appears during an Admin Abuse event. These are hosted by the developers before a major update, and they also run smaller Admin Abuse events at random with no fixed schedule. Because there is no set timing, the reliable way to catch one is to watch for the notification when it starts.

Mutation rules to keep in mind
A pet can only ever hold one mutation. Placing an already-mutated pet in your plot during a Cosmic or Volcano event will not stack a second mutation on top of it. That means a Golden pet stays Golden even if it sits through a mutation event.
Inferno is locked to the Volcano Event and cannot be pulled from the Pet Roll. If you are rolling and hoping for Inferno, it will not happen. The only way in is the Volcano, either through the free cage pet or by having pets in your base when the event triggers.
Because every mutation lifts earning rate and sale value together, mutated pets do more than pad your money per second. Collecting them also feeds your Index, which pays out permanent Luck and Cash boosts as you claim its rewards.
Which mutation to prioritize
Admin is the strongest mutation in the game. At 4x it applies the highest multiplier to a pet’s value and earning rate, and it is also the rarest since it only drops during Admin Abuse events. If you catch one of those events, an Admin pet is the one to hold onto above everything else.
Below Admin, Inferno at 3x and Cosmic at 2x are strong keepers whenever their events run, and Golden at 1.5x is the easiest to farm because it comes straight from rolling. When you are deciding what to sell, let the multiplier guide you. Keep the higher-tier mutations on your best pets and clear out low-value duplicates to make room.
