In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ, safes are compact, low-profile green metal containers marked with Korean writing and fitted with an electronic lock on the front. You can find them in the lettered military compounds around Hajin and at the Haneul Nuclear Reactor. They hold intel valuables, often with a stack of cash.

Quick answer: Look at the safe’s red lock panel and hold interact until the ring fills. The panel turns blue and the door opens. You don’t need a key or a code.

How to open a safe in DMZ

Opening a safe takes a few seconds, so clear the room before you start.

Face the safe and point your aim at the red electronic panel on its door. The panel displays a magnifying-glass symbol and an interact prompt (X on a controller).
Keep the interact button held down as a progress ring forms around the panel’s red padlock symbol. Once the ring fills, the lock appears open against a blue background, and the door swings outward.
Go through the SAFE loot window that opens. Hover over each item to see its card, which shows the name, rarity and VALUABLE value. For each item, choose SECURE to put it in a secure slot, choose BACKPACK, or use PING to mark it for your squad. Select CLOSE when you’re done.

Opening a safe also gives you a small XP bonus marked with a LOOTED tag, such as 75 XP or 82 XP.

You don’t have to finish the Clear the Military Compound side op before opening a compound safe. The safe is available while the operation is in progress, including at 77%.

DMZ safe locations in Hajin

Military compounds are walled bases shown on the Hajin tac map with a building icon. Entering one starts its “Clear the Military Compound” side op. Compounds Bravo, Charlie, Delta and Foxtrot each have a safe. To move quickly, ping the next compound on the tac map, drive there, and open the safe before you search the rest of the base.

Compound Bravo

Climb to the watchtower office. Beneath the windows, the safe rests on the floor pressed against one side of the wooden desk.

Compound Charlie

Go into the office building; if you are clearing Compound Charlie for No One Left, open the safe on the way. The safe is on the floor next to a desk, with a cracked screen on the wall behind it.

Compound Delta

Check the canvas tents. The safe is inside one of them, tucked into a corner against the tent wall.

Compound Foxtrot

Head into the office and look on the floor beside the wooden desk topped with an old radio; that’s where the safe is.

Haneul Nuclear Reactor (Crack Safe side op)

The reactor that hosts the Operation Fallen Ember story mission also holds a safe with its own “Crack Safe” side op. It is in a room of the reactor buildings, east of the reactor dome, and the tac map labels the spot CRACK SAFE. You open it the same way as a compound safe. Doing so shows SIDE OP COMPLETE and awards 225 XP.

What DMZ safes hold

Contents vary from one safe to the next, but these items can turn up:

ItemRarityVALUABLE value
NUCLEAR PROGRAM FILESRARE$2000
DEGRADED EXECUTION FOOTAGERARE$2000
BALLISTIC FLIGHT LOGSUNCOMMON$1000 each
REGIONAL COMBAT NOTES—Valuable
INFANTRY INVASION PLANS—Valuable
Cash—Stack, such as $250

Stacks add up on the card. For example, three BALLISTIC FLIGHT LOGS show a value of $3000. Each valuable card reads “Can be extracted and sold in the FOB for cash.”, so the value pays out only after you extract with the item and sell it at the FOB.
