DMZ in Modern Warfare 4 is built around three-person squads, but nothing stops you from going into Hajin alone. The catch is that there’s no solo-only lobby. You share the map with everyone else, the matchmaker only tries to pair you with other lone players, and those players can team up mid-match.
Quick answer: Yes. Hit Deploy and opt out of Squad Fill. Matchmaking prioritizes other solos, but it doesn’t guarantee them, so a full trio can still land in your lobby.
How to deploy solo in MW4 DMZ
Solo entry is controlled from the ready-up screen at your FOB. You don’t need a separate playlist, because there isn’t one.

If you want teammates instead, leave Squad Fill on and you’ll drop in with two other players. DMZ has no party finder beyond that, so it’s either friends in a party, Squad Fill, or nobody.

Add to Google Preferences →DMZ solo matchmaking: what it prioritizes and what it doesn’t promise
Every squad size gets the same treatment. The matchmaker aims for like-sized groups, then fills from whatever pool it has.
| You queue as | Matchmaking aims for | Guaranteed? |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | Other solos | No |
| Duo | Other duos | No |
| Trio | Other trios | No |
Infinity Ward put it plainly when players asked whether a dedicated solo queue was coming:
“In DMZ, matches are built with the direction of putting solos with solos, duos with duos, and trios with trios. However, there is no guarantee.”
Lobby balancing also depends on your region, your connection, and the deployment type you picked. When the solo pool is thin, you get duos or trios. Hitting DMZ Player Level 20 also means more hostile teams in your matches, which is roughly when the gentler early lobbies end.
Treat any player you spot as someone who may have teammates nearby, even in a lobby that started out all solo.
MW4 DMZ player count and squad sizes on Hajin
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Squads per match | Up to 20 |
| Players per match | Up to 60 |
| Starting squad size | 1 to 3 players |
| Max squad size (assimilation) | 4 players |
| Spawn timing at launch | All squads at once |
Sixty players sounds like a lot until you spread them across Hajin. This isn’t Warzone, so you won’t trip over an enemy squad at every corner. The 60 figure assumes 20 full trios, so an all-solo lobby would hold far fewer people.
On Hajin at launch, there’s no staggered entry. Whether you’re alone or in a full squad, the whole lobby drops together. Every deployment during early access also mixes AI enemies with real players, with no PvE-only option. If you lose connection, you can rejoin your ongoing deployment as long as the server is still running.
Truce, betrayal, and assimilation in DMZ
Squads aren’t fixed once you’re on the ground, which is why a solo lobby rarely stays a solo lobby. The rules are simple:
- Open the Ping Wheel to tell a rival squad you’d like a truce, or request to join their squad.
- A truce or assimilation can bring two or more solo players together in one squad.
- Assimilation lets a trio grow past three, capped at 4 players total.
- Betrayal is allowed, so a truce is not protection.
- Proximity Chat carries voices by distance and direction, including yours.

Assimilation works in your favor too. A solo can pick up teammates mid-match the same way. It just requires the other side to talk before shooting, and most squads you meet will open fire first.
DMZ solo survival tools: Tourniquet, Stealth Meter, and Traits
Infinity Ward added two systems specifically to support solo play. Nobody is around to pick you up, and nobody is watching your back, so these replace what a squad normally covers.
Tourniquet and health
Every operator deploys with the Tourniquet. When you go down, it gets you back up in a wounded state with 100 health instead of 150. A Medkit repairs the wound and makes the Tourniquet available again. Bandages, stims, and painkillers can push you back to 150 temporarily, but that boost wears off, and if you go down while relying on it, you can’t use the Tourniquet.
Self Revives still exist on top of this. You can loot or print them, and they have their own loadout slot. AI enemies ignore you while you’re downed, but real players will finish you off.
Stealth Meter and threat level
As AI gets close to detecting you, the Stealth Meter rises, changing from white to yellow to orange and playing an audio cue. Use that warning to break line of sight, go prone, or move behind cover. The meter detects AI only, not other operators.
Once you’re spotted, each area has a threat level from 1 to 5 stars. One star brings reinforcements, and five sends Deathstalker drones and hunt squads. Melee, throwing knives, and suppressed weapons don’t raise it, and leaving the area lets it settle. Killing players also raises your bounty, and a Wanted operator gets marked on the tacmap for nearby enemies.
Traits that help solo players
You can allocate up to 18 Trait Points among the Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist trees. With no one able to revive you, these are the most important choices:
| Trait | Tree | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Possum | Warfighter | Revive from death, once per match |
| Viper Sense | Warfighter | Hidden from thermals and AI targeting |
| Thermal Padding | Scout | Hidden from UAVs |
| Die Hard | Survivalist | Exfil calls automatically in Last Stand |
| Metabolism | Survivalist | Slowly regain Tourniquet health loss |
Solo DMZ is a deliberate high-risk option, not a separate mode. You keep every item you find, and you also face every trio on your own. DMZ early access opened October 20 for digital pre-orders, and Modern Warfare 4 and DMZ fully launch on October 23.
