The opening movie for Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse runs just under six minutes and does the work of a full prologue. It fixes the time and place, explains why a vampire hunter is being called to a European capital, and introduces the two characters at the center of the story before you touch the controls. If you have only glimpsed the footage, here is what it actually establishes.

Quick answer: The intro is set in Paris in the year 1499. Trevor Belmont is summoned by the Bishop of Paris to deal with a supernatural disaster, arrives by boat with his daughter Rose Belmont, hands her a deck of her late mother’s tarot cards, and splits off, leaving Rose to investigate the city alone.

Paris in 1499, under a red moon

The sequence opens on a black screen with the year 1499 and a narrator reading a royal summons that invokes the King of France. A letter is being written on behalf of the crown, and its words carry the whole first half of the movie as the camera moves through a city in collapse.

The card identifies the city as Paris. The narration describes a terrible evil overtaking the city, a crimson moon overhead, and chaos spreading through the streets. Red light shines through Notre-Dame’s rose window as a stone gargoyle breaks loose from the cathedral and flies above the rooftops.

An overhead shot shows the streets on fire, red skies, and a small boat moving down the river. The letter lists the damage plainly: the city watch has vanished, the bravest knights have fled the royal court, and the citizens who remain are hiding in their homes. Trade and taxes have stopped, and even the Church’s income has dried up with its tithes.

The narration adds that every exorcist, doctor, and scholar from Normandy to the Alps has been sought out, and all of them have failed. Shots of chained skeletons and bodies piled inside a ruined building drive the point home before the letter finally names its intended reader.

The Bishop’s summons and Trevor Belmont

The note is for Trevor Belmont, describing him as House Belmont’s final descendant and the finest hunter of vampires. It offers titles, land, and gold in return for saving Paris. Claude de Champigny signs the parchment; he is Paris’s bishop and a canon of Notre-Dame.

Trevor is the hooded, bearded figure reading the missive aboard a small riverboat. The camera lingers on his weapon, the golden eye ornament on its handle marking it as the Belmont family whip. His reaction to the offer is dismissive, saying the Bishop mistakes his own desires for a hunter’s.

Rose Belmont is the one you actually play

While Trevor talks, green amphibious creatures assemble on the canal wall over the boat, then jump down to attack. A hooded stranger kills one with a sword and addresses Trevor as “Father.” She pulls back her hood, showing long blonde hair, and says he is not the final Belmont. She is Rose Belmont, Trevor’s daughter, a trained vampire hunter, and the character you play for the remainder of the game.

Once the pair dock at the crimson-lit harbor, Trevor compares the atmosphere to Wallachia twenty years earlier, during Dracula’s return. He and Rose talk through whether the summons is a trap or a mystery still unfolding. They decide to separate: Rose will investigate the city streets while Trevor goes to speak with Bishop Claude de Champigny in person.

Before rowing off, Trevor hands Rose tarot cards created by her deceased mother. They have a key role in gameplay: Rose casts tarot-based Arcana instead of using the traditional sub-weapons that earlier Belmont heroes discovered in candles, making this deck the basis of her magic. Trevor advises her to work alone and beware her “curse,” then vanishes into the water’s red mist, leaving Rose on the dock.

Where this sits in the Castlevania timeline

Rose is the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades. The 1499 setting places Belmont’s Curse roughly two decades after Dracula’s return, which is why Trevor’s line about Wallachia lands the way it does. The game ventures into Dracula’s castle as it manifests in the middle of Paris, mixing real city landmarks like Notre-Dame with the series’ usual gothic architecture.

The Vampire Killer whip from the intro

During Trevor’s section, the camera draws attention to the Vampire Killer, a treasured weapon of the Belmont clan. Leon Belmont created this Legendary whip, which was handed down through the family and is the weapon Rose brings into the castle. Its tip sets foes alight on contact, and defeated enemies burst into flames. The swing’s outermost point inflicts the most damage. Here’s how it compares with the basic starter whip.

Both whips share the Whip Drag combo finisher, cost 3 mana per hit, and carry 30 stagger power. The Vampire Killer is found in Notre-Dame, while the plain Whip turns up in the Catacombs of Paris.

Bosses the intro points toward

The red-lit Notre-Dame and the wider city are where Rose’s hunt plays out, and defeating bosses seals their power into her tarot cards as Arcana. The names the opening gestures at, from Dracula at the castle’s heart to Joan tied to Notre-Dame, carry very different health and attack figures.

Joan rewards the Infernal Pyre Arcana and the Warrior’s Key, while Medusa grants Petrifying Gaze and the Prophetess’s Key. Carmilla hands over Blood Spikes. Those keys gate access to further areas, so each boss the intro teases is also a step deeper into the castle Rose has been left alone to explore.
