In Enshrouded 1.0, each Archaic Essence tier is obtained from Shroud Lairs in a single region. Destroy the Fell nest inside a lair, then collect the essence it leaves behind. Use it to place gems in weapon sockets.

Once you collect it, the essence goes into your inventory under its tier name, such as Archaic Essence I.
Gem Forges are commonly found close to Shroud Lairs, meaning either location often leads you to the other.
The Gem Forge and Shroud Lair locations guide lists both, and the interactive map shows each region. In the Springlands, the Gem Forge quest sends you into a nearby Shroud Lair for your first Archaic Essence I.
What Archaic Essence does
Archaic Essence is a crafting material with seven grades, numbered I through VII. The in-game item text reads:
“A radiant whirl of energy that is needed to insert gems into weaponry. While initially used by the Ancients, it was claimed by the Fell to fuel their brood until you freed it from its newly organic prison.”
In practice, it is the cost of socketing. Each time you put a gem into a weapon socket, you spend Archaic Essence.
Archaic Essence crafting recipes
Archaic Essence also appears in a handful of recipes. Most are Sparkworks items, plus one Infusion Altar recipe at the top tier.

Sparkworks recipes can use essence of tier I, II, or III, so supplies from lairs in the Springlands, Revelwood, or Nomad Highlands qualify. Archaic Infusion is different: it requires 6 Archaic Essence VII, found only in the Shroud Lairs of Cinder’s Cradle.
