Gem Forges are where Enshrouded lets you put a gem into a weapon, and Shroud Lairs are the Fell caves where the Alchemist’s quest sends you for your first weapon gem.
Quick answer: Across the map, you’ll find 21 Gem Forges and 15 Shroud Lairs. To slot a gem, take it along with a compatible weapon and Archaic Essence I to a forge. The locations are organized by region below.
Finding And Using A Gem Forge: How the forge and lair link up
The Alchemist gives you the quest Finding And Using A Gem Forge. It starts by asking you to find a forge, and the first objective says the Alchemist already knows where to look.
“To harness the power of a gemstone, you will first need to know the location of a Gem Forge. Thankfully, the Alchemist knows where to look.”
The forge has enemies in it when you get there, so the next objective is to clear it out before you look around.
“You’ve reached the location of the Gem Forge, but there are enemies nearby. Defeat the enemies inside the Gem Forge before taking a look around!”
The quest then asks you to work out where the intruders came from. Its explanation points to the forge’s crafting material:
“Perhaps the Fell came here to claim the Archaic Essence I used in weapon augmentation for themselves.”
That trail ends at a Shroud Lair. The game describes it as a winding cave covered in Shroud, and you have to go all the way to the bottom of it.
“The Fell took the Archaic Essence I into a winding, enshrouded cave. What purpose are they after? Explore the depths of the Shroud Lair to proceed! Consider gathering more Archaic Essence I as you go forth to reclaim it from the Shroud!”
A Fell Banshee waits at the heart of the lair, and it holds a weapon gem. The objective to defeat and loot it reads:
“The heart of the Shroud Lair is haunted by a Fell Banshee. The Shroud will continue to spread here and steal resources to fuel their own brood unless the Banshee is destroyed!”
The last objective sends you back to the forge with everything you collected:
“Take your newly acquired gem, a suitable weapon, and the Archaic Essence I back to the Gem Forge. Use these components to slot a gem into a weapon to empower it!”
