Getting back to your Flame Altar in Enshrouded: open the map and hold R, or pick the altar from the map’s People & Places list. The world map carries a built-in return to the altar you last used, and it drops you right next to the flame at your base.
Quick answer: Press M to open the world map, then hold R for “Fast Travel to last visited Altar”. After a short loading screen you stand at your last visited Flame Altar. If R does nothing, press 1 on the map, choose your altar under “FAST TRAVEL: FLAME ALTAR” and press F.

On one run, holding R in the map footer did not respond for us even out in the open, away from the Shroud. The map’s People & Places list got us home instead, and it also lets you choose which altar to travel to.

Use it to escape a fight
In our game, fast travel still worked while an enemy was hitting us out in the open, outside the Shroud, with health very low and the screen edges red. We opened the map, held R, and the loading screen took us to the altar. On arrival, the HUD condition list showed a red “Threats nearby” line.

When fast travel is blocked
Inside the Shroud, the R option in the map footer is greyed out. Pressing it anyway puts a red line at the top of the map: “FAST TRAVEL IS NOT POSSIBLE WHILE IN THE SHROUD”.

Walk back out of the Shroud first. Most of our trips from open ground outside it worked with R; on the one run where R did not respond, the People & Places list above still took us to the altar. If you are racing the clock in there, the Shroud timer guide explains how it counts down.
Which altar it takes you to
The footer names the destination plainly: “last visited Altar”. We had a single active altar (ACTIVE ALTARS 1 / 2), so every R trip ended at that one. To pick a specific destination, use the People & Places list, which named each place we could travel to. The Flame Altar is also where you respawn after dying, which is the starting point for getting your items back.
Once we had several altars, the list under “FAST TRAVEL: FLAME ALTAR” named each one “HOME level” plus that altar’s level. Our original altar, upgraded to Altar Level 2, showed as “HOME level 2”, while each new altar we placed showed as “HOME level 1”. After placing more altars, our list read “HOME level 1”, “HOME level 2”, “HOME level 1” and “Cinder Vault”, so some rows shared the same name. Highlight a row to see its marker on the map before pressing F, and check where you land.
With no mounts in Enshrouded 1.0, fast travel between Flame Altars and the glider are what stand in for a horse or any other rideable animal.
