Legendary Fish are the rarest catches in Fields of Mistria, and there are only four of them — one tied to each season. They cannot be sold, they cannot go in a fish tank, and each one can only be pulled out of the water a single time per save. They exist for one reason, which is finishing the Museum’s Fish Wing.
Quick answer: Reach Fishing Level 30, buy the tier 3 Legendary perk for 80 Essence at Caldarus’ Statue on your farm, then fish the correct water type on a day that opens with the “A legendary fish is nearby” message, in the matching weather, watching for the right shadow size.
Requirements before a Legendary Fish will spawn
Three conditions gate these fish, and none of them can be skipped. You need a fishing rod, which you can pick up within the first few hours of play. You need Fishing Level 30. And you need the Legendary perk, a tier 3 fishing perk that costs 80 Essence.
Until that perk is purchased, Legendary Fish simply do not generate, no matter what season, weather, or location you fish in. Because there is one fish per season, a new save realistically needs a full in-game year to collect all four, so it is worth having the perk unlocked before your second year starts.
Rod tier does not lock you out. A Legendary Fish can be caught with a weaker rod, though the Silver Fishing Rod casts farther and makes reaching distant shadows far less frustrating.

Add to Google Preferences →The morning notification is the trigger
Once the perk is active, the game tells you when to bother hunting. At the start of a day, a message reading “A legendary fish is nearby” appears below the calendar date, in the same spot birthdays and events show up. That message means the Legendary Fish for the current season has spawned somewhere in the world.
No message means no Legendary Fish that day. You will only ever see the notification for one fish at a time, since availability is tied to the season you are currently in.
All four Legendary Fish: season, weather, and shadow size
| Fish | Season / Weather | Water | Shadow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cherry Fish | Spring, Windy | Pond | Small |
| Lightning Fish | Summer, Storm | River | Medium |
| Leaf Fish | Fall, Windy | River | Small |
| Snow Fish | Winter, Snow | Ocean | Medium |
Weather is not negotiable. Fishing a pond in spring on a clear day will never produce a Cherry Fish, and no amount of casting in summer sunshine will hook a Lightning Fish. Check the forecast the evening before with a crystal ball furniture item so you know whether tomorrow is worth planning around — a cherry blossom shown inside it means a windy spring day is coming.
Pond spots for the Cherry Fish
The Cherry Fish is a spring pond fish with a small shadow, and it only shows up on windy days when blossoms are drifting across the screen. The ponds along The Eastern Road are the most reliable hunting ground, including the large pond past the bridge and the one tucked into the bottom-right corner of the map.
If nothing small is swimming there, the pond west of the Manor House in Mistria Town is the other option. Ignore every large shadow you see; those are not your fish.
River spots for the Lightning Fish and Leaf Fish
Two of the four live in rivers, which makes them the fiddliest to track down, because rivers run through several maps. The Lightning Fish appears in summer during a storm and casts a medium shadow. The Leaf Fish appears on windy fall days with a small shadow.
For the Lightning Fish, start at The Narrows, specifically the stretch of river under the bridge south of the museum and Errol’s house. For the Leaf Fish, The Eastern Road river beside the repaired bridge is the strongest lead. If neither turns up the right shadow, the rivers in Mistria Town and on your own farm are also valid spawn areas and worth a sweep.

Windy fall days are considerably more common than summer storms, so the Leaf Fish usually gives you several attempts across the season. The Lightning Fish is the one most likely to cost you a full in-game year if you miss the storm.
Ocean spot for the Snow Fish
The Snow Fish is the only Legendary Fish that lives in saltwater. It appears at The Beach in winter while snow is falling, and it shows up as a medium shadow. Any water along The Beach can produce it, so pick one stretch of shoreline and work it rather than sprinting from end to end.
The small island west of the main shore is easy to forget and is a legitimate place to cast. Swim out carefully, since getting too close to other fish will scatter them.
Why the right shadow isn’t appearing
If the notification fired and you are in the correct water type with the correct weather, the shadow pool in that area is simply not cooperating. Leave the map and come back to refresh the fish that are swimming there. At The Beach, stepping in and out of the Tackle Shop does the same job for ocean shadows.
Beyond that, the usual reasons a hunt fails are short: the Legendary perk was never purchased, the weather does not match, you are fishing the wrong body of water, or you are hooking the wrong shadow size. Cherry and Leaf are small; Lightning and Snow are medium.
Reaching Fishing Level 30 faster
Fishing is one of the slower skills to level, and there is no minigame to master — every catch lands as long as you hit the reel prompt in time. Fishing and diving are the two activities that raise the skill, so treat both as part of your daily routine instead of grinding them in a panic when a season is ending.
Essence spent on lower-tier fishing perks makes the climb less tedious.
| Perk | Effect | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Appealing Reeling | Fish are drawn to your bobber from farther away | 10 Essence |
| Weedline Watcher | Reduces how often you pull up Junk | 15 Essence |
| Perfect Catch | Uncommon and Rare fish appear more often | 40 Essence |
Tip: Appealing Reeling is the cheapest and the one you will feel most, since it cuts down on repositioning every cast.
Donating Legendary Fish to the Museum
There is exactly one use for these fish. Take each catch to the Museum and donate it toward the Fish Wing. You cannot sell them, and they cannot be placed in the fish tanks in your cabin, so holding onto one does nothing except delay the reward.
Donating all four completes the Legendary Fish set, and the Fish Wing set completion reward pays out a piece of furniture, its crafting recipe, and a treasure box. The quality of that box scales with how many other Fish Wing sets you have already finished, so turning in the Legendary set later in your collection run yields better contents.

The set panel is also your confirmation that a catch registered. After a donation, that fish fills its slot and the collection percentage moves; if the slot is still empty, the fish is sitting in your inventory or chest somewhere. Since each Legendary Fish can only be caught once per save, plan around the weather rather than the calendar, and a full set is realistically a one-year project.
