Sprites in Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 used to punish you for finding the same one twice. Extracting a duplicate handed over some Sprite Dust and nothing else, which meant the only real way to master a Sprite was to drag your own copy through match after match and hope it survived to Level 5. A September 4, 2026 change rewired that, and duplicates are now the fastest path to mastery.
Quick answer: Extract any duplicate of a Sprite you already own — even a Level 1 one — and the XP is applied to the copy sitting in your collection. Once that copy hits Level 5, bring it into a match and extract it to master it.
What the duplicate Sprite XP change does
The rule is short. If a Sprite is already in your collection and you find another copy of it during a Battle Royale match, extracting that copy awards Sprite XP to the one you own. You do not need to have your own version equipped, and you do not need to have carried it into that match at all.
Epic put it plainly when the change went live.
Duplicate Sprites now level up your collection! When you extract a Sprite you already have a copy of, it will give Sprite XP to the one in your collection.
Duplicates still pay out Sprite Dust as they always did. The XP is stacked on top, so nothing was traded away for the new behaviour.
Your Sprites collection menu is where the progress shows up. Open it, pick the Sprite you are working on, and check its level bar — that number is the one duplicate extractions move.
Level a Sprite with duplicates
The final step: extracting a Level 5 Sprite
Duplicates get a Sprite to Level 5, but they do not finish the job. Mastery still requires you to equip your own Level 5 copy, take it into a match, and extract it successfully at an Extraction Site or with a Portable Extractor.
You will know it worked from the end-of-match screen, which calls out the mastery and any Sprite Mastery reward it unlocked. In the collection menu, the Sprite is then tagged as mastered. That status is permanent on your account — if the Sprite is later lost or eliminated in another match it drops back to Level 1, but your mastery progress stays intact.
If mastery did not register, the cause is almost always one of two things. Either the Sprite was not at Level 5 when it went into the crate, or the extraction did not complete because you were eliminated first.
Sprites the duplicate XP rule does not cover
Two Sprites sit outside the standard system, so do not waste extractions trying to feed them duplicates.

Note: the Crown Sprite requirement was already reduced to a single Victory Royale, so it is less punishing than it was, just handled separately.
Fastest way to farm duplicate Sprite XP
Because any duplicate counts, the efficient loop is volume rather than babysitting one Sprite. Land somewhere dense, sweep for Sprites, extract whatever you find, and repeat. Sprite-heavy windows such as Power Hours and new Sprite events are worth planning around, since every duplicate that drops can push one of your existing Sprites closer to Level 5.
Mastery Monday remains the strongest multiplier. The 24-hour event doubles Sprite progression, and it now pairs with duplicate XP instead of forcing you to focus on one equipped Sprite. The next Mastery Monday begins on September 7.
If you are also levelling a Sprite the old way, XP still accrues while it follows you. Opening chests, ammo boxes, containers, Rare Chests and vaults all feed it, as do eliminations and completed extractions.
Why mastery is worth chasing now
The v42.10 update on September 3 added a Sprite Mastery reward track and cut the Sprite Dust cost of resummoning a mastered Sprite by 50 percent. Working through that track pays out XP, Sprite Dust, Portable Extractors, Back Blings, the Air Sprite Shade Umbrella and extra Extraction Frames, with some Sprites unlocking additional cosmetic styles.
Taken together, the two changes reshape how the season plays. Duplicates get you to Level 5 without a dedicated grind, mastered Sprites are cheaper to bring back when you lose one, and a Sprite you already own is no longer a dead spawn on the ground.
