Every core movement trick for the Ranked climb, sorted by how much impact it has on your survival and fights.

Every core movement trick for the Ranked climb, sorted by how much impact it has on your survival and fights.

Ranked play in Fortnite punishes sloppy positioning, so the way you sprint, slide, and reposition often decides fights before a single shot lands. The movement tricks below are sorted by how much they change your survival odds and how often you can lean on them each match, across both Build and Zero Build.

TierMovement techniques
SSliding to conserve stamina, Crouch-and-stand while firing
ABunny hopping to carry momentum, Shockwave and Overdrive Grenade pushes
BTunneling (straight, front wall, floor ramp, diagonal)
CRamp rushing

How this was ranked: placements weigh how directly each technique keeps you alive, how many situations it applies to, and how easy it is to use consistently under pressure. The list reflects the Chapter 7 Season 1 loot pool as of August 2026.

S tier: The habits you use every match

Sliding is the single most repeatable movement skill in Ranked. Sprinting drains stamina, but sliding and then starting a fresh sprint right before your slide speed runs out lets you travel much farther on the same stamina than sprinting the whole way. You can also build speed by sliding down hills and slopes, and stack a healing item like a Chug Jug or Big Shield on top of that momentum to recover while you rotate.

The crouch-and-stand trick earns the other S slot because it directly lowers how much damage you take in gunfights. Repeatedly crouching and standing during mid-range and close-range fights throws off enemy aim, especially headshots. It matters most in Zero Build, but works anywhere. Do not just spam the crouch button, though. You have to keep adjusting your aim so your crosshair stays on target while you bob up and down.

A tier: High impact when the situation fits

Bunny hopping extends momentum you have already earned. After sliding down a hill or landing from a Shockwave or Overdrive Grenade, jump while your speed is boosted, slide, jump again, slide again, and repeat. It keeps a burst of speed alive far longer than a plain sprint and pairs cleanly with on-the-move healing.

Grenade movement sits just below sliding because it is powerful but resource-limited. Overdrive Grenades work in both Builds and Zero Build, while the standard Shockwave Grenade is currently limited to the Zero Build loot pool. The main pushes are worth drilling.

Using Shockwave & Overdrive Grenades Effectively - Fortnite - 1
Push typeHow to do it
High-altitude pushLook down, throw a Shockwave, then do a forward sprint jump to launch ahead.
Low-altitude pushThrow a Shockwave at your feet and sprint forward; add a bunny hop at the end on flat ground.
Launch straight upLook directly at the ground, throw a Shockwave beneath you, and jump just before it detonates.
Subtle pushStand still and throw a Shockwave in front, behind, or to a side to nudge yourself that way.

Note: a standard Shockwave Grenade can also break through structures and builds while you push. An Overdrive Grenade will not break structures, so plan your route around that difference.

B tier: Tunneling for protected rotations

Tunneling combines movement and building to cross open ground safely, which is why it ranks high for Build players but sits below the universal habits above. There are several variants depending on where the threat is.

how to tunnel in Fortnite
Tunnel typeBuild order while moving
Straight tunnelFloor below, walls left and right, floor above. Repeat as you move.
Front wall tunnelFloor below, walls left and right, floor above, then a front wall. Edit through the front wall and repeat.
Floor ramp pushFloor below, a wall to your left, and a ramp while looking left to cover the right side and above. Uses fewer materials.
Diagonal tunnelWhile moving diagonally, floor below, floor above, and walls in front and on one side. Repeat.

C tier: Ramp rushing

Ramp rushing lands in C tier because it is the most demanding to execute cleanly and the easiest to punish if your placements are slow. It still matters for closing distance on a target in Build mode, and there are two dependable approaches depending on where the enemy is.

How to Ramp Rush in Fortnite
  • Target in front of you: floor below, wall in front, ramp in front, repeat; or ramp below, floor below, ramp in front, wall below, repeat.
  • Target above you: ramp in front, floor above, pyramid above, tile edit the floor, tile edit the pyramid, repeat.

Where to practice these

For ramp rushing and tunneling reps, load the Creative map with code 8534-2582-6519. It lets you turn on slow motion, so you can walk through each build order at your own pace before taking it into a live match. Lock the S-tier habits first, since sliding and the crouch-and-stand pattern pay off in every fight, then layer the grenade pushes and building techniques on top as your rank climbs.
