Patch 7.1 brought two permanent Snezhnaya World Quests whose stories unfold over multiple real-world days, with chapters gated by a daily countdown. In “Swords and Secrets,” Druzhna Commander Vesna searches the region for the scattered sword spirits. In “Upstream Variations,” the Traveler encounters Vodyanitsa, a Water Imp soprano with the Korolevskiy Troupe. Their storylines meet on Day 5 inside the Korolevskiy Theater in Snezhnograd.
Quick answer: Both are permanent Snezhnaya World Quests that release one chapter per daily reset. Day 5 takes Vesna into the Korolevskiy Theater to corner a sword spirit and sends the Traveler to Vodyanitsa’s dressing room with a gift.
Two connected World Quests in Snezhnaya
“Swords and Secrets” has the Traveler help Vesna reclaim her missing sword spirits. They were scattered across Snezhnaya after Vesna tested techniques from the old Liyue text Ancient Sword Esoterica. To find them, she uses her modified treasure compass, the “Divine Sense Compass,” which detects the runaways. Its description clarifies that the name has no connection to actual Divine Sense.
“Upstream Variations” takes a more personal, quieter approach, following Vodyanitsa, the prima soprano. She speaks frankly about her disappointment with empty social prestige: wealthy patrons treat her performances as a way to display their status instead of listening to the Water Imps’ sincere songs. Open “Vodyanitsa’s Special Notebook” on the event page to see where that day’s meeting takes place.
The opening chapters establish the tone. On Day 1, Vesna confronts the “Master of Potions” at Fellfrost Peak. The sword spirit brags about an elixir of immortality, until Paimon notes that a sword cannot drink it because it has no mouth. For Vodyanitsa’s Day 1, the Traveler uses handwritten VIP tickets to get past usher Vzdykhalov and meet her backstage. These spirits are comic rather than threatening; instead of fighting, players turn each one’s own reasoning against it.

Day 5 moves the hunt to the Korolevskiy Theater, following a rumor about a strange shadow that people keep spotting around the rehearsals. Activating the “Divine Sense Compass” in Snezhnograd marks the theater as the roaming zone for the “Mysterious Sword Spirit,” and the trail leads straight into the building where Vodyanitsa and the prima ballerina Odette are preparing.

In a cutscene, Vodyanitsa tells Odette about the ghost rumors, and Vesna then appears behind them unexpectedly. The spirit concealed here is the “Master of Sound,” hiding behind a drape. Vodyanitsa performs onstage, allowing Vesna to use her sensing ability to uncover the hidden blade. Vesna then speaks an incantation calling what is concealed into view and demanding that it reveal itself.

Stepping onto the stage starts a cutscene in which Odette and Vodyanitsa work together to catch the spirit. Its capture is not the end of the chapter.

A large, talking Greater Sword Spirit then emerges on the balcony above, flanked by “Second of the Pack” and “Third of the Pack.” It refuses any peace and challenges Vesna to a showdown on the frozen river beneath the glaciers.

The chapter closes on a conversation between Vesna, the Traveler, and Paimon about the final sword spirit, after which the questline locks behind a timer.

What happens on Day 5 of Upstream Variations
Vodyanitsa’s Day 5 opens with a gift. Outside a Snezhnograd shop, Ineffa says Aino made a small phonograph worn around the neck, the “Happy-Quacky Phonograph Ducky,” in return for ice cream. The Traveler had Ineffa commission it for Vodyanitsa.

A cutscene follows Vodyanitsa as she walks around Snezhnograd, speaks with townspeople, and considers what being a Water Imp means for her status. She later goes back to her dressing room to sort invitation letters. The Traveler and Paimon arrive with fish and meat skewers, then give her the duck phonograph.
Vodyanitsa turns the gift into a joke. She insists the Traveler and Paimon record a song into the device first before she will sing, teasing the Traveler about serenading a Whopperflower and Paimon about the Onikabuto song, then drags them out to find a Whopperflower muse. The overworld returns showing the next chapter locked behind a countdown.
How the daily countdown works
Each questline makes one segment available per daily reset. If the screen says “Next chapter unlocks in 12h” (or “Next quest unlocks” for the sword-spirit chain), the next step is locked until the countdown ends; that message marks the day’s completion. Wait times vary by chapter: the first segments have shorter delays than later ones. Day 1 finishes with a 13-hour timer, later chapters have waits of up to 23 hours, and Day 5 has a 12-hour wait.
The gate advances with the daily server rollover at 04:00. Because it depends on the clock, dialogue choices, Resin, and Story Keys cannot speed it up. Once the countdown ends, the next chapter becomes available again through the Events Overview menu. This is why players often tackle both questlines in Snezhnaya during the same daily visit.
The complete run of each quest takes seven calendar days, so Day 5 sits two chapters short of the final unlocks. Neither quest expires, so a late start finishes with identical rewards, just on a later date.
Requirements to reach these chapters
Both quests auto-accept once their prerequisites are met, and each is tied to a different point in the Chapter VII Archon Quest. There is no NPC to find and no exclamation mark to chase; if you qualify, the quest lands in your log on its own and appears in the World Quest tab.
| Quest | AR | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|
| Swords and Secrets | 18+ | Act III of Chapter VII — “White Night, Like a Dream Upon Waking” |
| Upstream Variations | 18+ | Chapter VII: Act II “Wraith’s Nocturne” plus Meeting Point: Tidesong Cavern at Level 2 |
“Upstream Variations” has an Act II story prerequisite, while “Swords and Secrets” requires Act III, so most players can qualify for the former sooner. There is another condition to check: unlocking Tidesong Cavern alone does not count; the Meeting Point must show Level 2 before the quest is available.
Rewards for finishing both chains
Neither storyline awards banner pulls. Each instead grants account materials and a cosmetic unlock, so both remain worthwhile even if you already own Vesna or Vodyanitsa. The cosmetic rewards arrive only after the full seven-day run, not on Day 5.
| Quest | Rewards |
|---|---|
| Swords and Secrets | Primogems x20, Mora x30,000, Hero’s Wit x3, Mystic Enhancement Ore x6, Druzhna Special Dispatch Order x1, Construct Appearance: Flutterwing x1 |
| Upstream Variations | Primogem x20, Mora x30,000, Hero’s Wit x3, Guide to Fortitude x3, plus the Happy-Quacky Phonograph Ducky appearance for Vodyanitsa |
The two appearance rewards in “Swords and Secrets” are worth reading carefully. The Druzhna Special Dispatch Order is a usable item, and using it makes a Sword Spirit accompany Vesna during flight, while Construct Appearance: Flutterwing gives the Prime Ice Construct another look. On Vodyanitsa’s side, using the Happy-Quacky Phonograph Ducky grants her a new decorative appearance.
Reaching Day 5 confirms both chains are progressing normally. Each chapter ends the same way, with an overworld screen showing the countdown to the next unlock, and clearing today’s segment leaves nothing else to do until the next 04:00 reset opens the following chapter.
