In Graveyard Keeper 2, Town Gratitude is the gold thumbs-up resource that determines your weekly sermon’s yield. The result is based on whichever is lower: your Gratitude or your church rating. Even a fully upgraded church produces nothing with zero Gratitude, so maxing the meter before Wrath day converts the sermon into Faith and coin.

Quick answer: Buy 5 river fish fillets plus 30 each of wheat, carrots, beets, and cabbages from Herm, then sell them straight back to him to fill all 10 Gratitude in one trip.

How Town Gratitude works

Gratitude is spent when you preach. A sermon consumes an amount tied to your congregation, and having more Gratitude available supports a larger congregation and more Faith. It sits one step before Faith in progression, so you build Gratitude during the week, spend it at the sermon, and convert that into Faith for Inspirations and travel waypoints.

The meter resets every week. Partial progress toward a point is tracked during the week, but any leftover fraction is wiped when the new cycle begins on Pride day. Because Gratitude does not carry over and cannot exceed your cap, the goal is to arrive at Wrath day with the meter already full rather than scrambling at the last minute.

Fastest method: buy and resell goods to Herm

Thumbs-up goods only award Gratitude when you sell them, and Herm stocks several of the same items that pay Gratitude on the way back. That opens a shortcut. Buy eligible stock from him and immediately resell it, and the Gratitude attaches to the resale even though you lose a little coin on the spread. In one clean run, this fills the entire 10-point meter.

Travel to Herm’s Store in the village and open the Trade menu. Watch for the golden thumbs-up marker next to items, which shows exactly which sales will move your Gratitude meter.
Buy 5 River fish fillets, 30 Wheat, 30 Carrots, 30 Beets, and 30 Cabbages. This batch costs 7 silver 53 copper.

In that window, select the selling side and return all of the purchased goods to Herm. The sale gives you 5 silver 27 copper and the full 10 Town Gratitude, leaving a net expense of only 2 silver 26 copper.

Exact prices shift with reputation and discounts, so treat these coin figures as a guide rather than fixed values. Use this route as a fallback when your own production falls short, since generating Gratitude from crops and burials you already own avoids paying a trading loss every week.

Spend the Gratitude at the Wrath day sermon

Sermons run once per week on Wrath day, marked by a dark red symbol in the calendar. Filling the meter only pays off when you preach, so head to the church straight after topping up.

Pull your Basic prayer and the Faith you need from the storage chest in the church graveyard, then step inside.

Interact with the altar, choose the prayer, and start the sermon. A successful service returns Faith and money.

You know the method worked when the Prayer Report opens showing a successful prayer, your visitor count, and the Faith and money received. Emptying the church offering box afterward recovers the small coin you spent at Herm, often leaving a tiny net gain rather than a loss.

Repeatable Gratitude sources and weekly limits

Each category stops paying Gratitude after you hit its own weekly limit, so the meter fills fastest when you spread sales across several sources instead of dumping one huge pile of a single crop. Selling past a limit still earns coin, just no more Gratitude until the reset.

Burial certificates provide the most dependable starting point. Handle the bodies that arrive on most days by burying or cremating them, then sell their certificates to Januarius at the tavern for coin and Gratitude. This supply stops at about 5 Gratitude per week, so use it as your base and obtain the remainder from other sources.

Town Gratitude scrolls are the guaranteed filler. Quests hand out a supply early on, and Januarius sells more at the tavern for around 5 Silver each. Each scroll grants +5 Gratitude when consumed from your inventory.

Excess points are lost the moment you exceed your rank cap, so save scrolls until right before a sermon and only use them when there is room under the cap. Wasting a scroll while already near the limit throws away 5 points.

Raise the Town Gratitude cap from 10 to 20

The starting rank caps Gratitude at 10, which keeps sermons small. To raise it to 20, push through the main story until you win the first Capture the Flag-style battle that retakes the town and reopens the port.

Before that fight, clear the smaller quests it depends on, including Herbert’s request to improve your graveyard rating. For the battle itself, save enough coin to hire mercenaries, prepare fortifications at the barracks to deploy, and brew health and damage potions in the lab. Winning lifts the cap and unlocks the town warehouse, where completing port orders can hand over 15, 20, or 25 Gratitude at once.

Once the cap is 20, the Herm buy-and-resell route still fills the first 10 quickly, but you will need crops, burials, fish, and quest rewards working together to top off the rest. Lean on the sources you are already maintaining during the week, then check the meter before Wrath day and only pay Herm for the final points if you are still short.
