Zombies in Graveyard Keeper 2 are not just corpses to bury. Once you unlock and equip them, they become a standing labor force that chops wood, hauls materials, crafts goods, and runs stations while you handle everything else.

Quick answer: Complete the Dream Dust questline to receive two free zombies, build a Zombie Supplier Station, then hand each zombie a tool that grants at least one Work Mastery so it can operate a matching workstation.

Unlock your first zombies through the Dream Dust questline

Your first two zombies come free from the Plague Doctor during the Dream Dust story chain. The path runs from a hidden hatch in your home down into an underground dungeon and up into the Abandoned Tower.

In the rear room of your house, use the hatch that was locked earlier to reach the basement below. Treat the area as a small dungeon and remove the rubble sealing the passage, freeing the trapped Plague Doctor.
Freeing the Plague Doctor unlocks the Abandoned Tower above your base. At the tower entrance, use the Inquisitor medallion together with the combination in your inventory to unlock the door.
Use the Study Table to research Water and Blood, which reveals the required items. Afterward, go to the Flask (Laboratory) Table and combine water with blood to make Dream Dust.
Hand the finished Dream Dust to the Plague Doctor. He leads you to his lab, where he gives you your first two zombies at no cost.

Build the Zombie Supplier Station

Before a zombie can be assigned, you need a Zombie Supplier Station built at the workbench. Gather these materials:

  • 4x Wooden Planks
  • 4x Bronze Nails

With the station in place, you can pick up a zombie, carry it on your shoulder, and set it down at a workbench to put it on the job.

Give zombies tools to raise Work Mastery

A zombie always begins with zero Work Mastery; at that level, it simply remains at its station without working. Equipment provides mastery, but the tool must suit the station. For example, giving one a hammer will not make it chop logs at a sawmill, regardless of its mastery.

ToolWork MasteryEnables
Rusty tools+1Basic early tasks, caps out fast
Bronze Axe+2Woodworking Workbench, makes Wooden Planks
Bronze Hammer+2Other stations, including Bronze Nails
Bronze-tier or better+2 or moreAdvanced materials and higher yields

Give a zombie a Bronze Axe and, after it reaches the necessary mastery, it can use a Woodworking Workbench to make Wooden Planks while waiting for the required inputs. Replace that axe with a Bronze Hammer to let the same zombie use other stations. Because certain recipes have minimum mastery requirements, better tools are the only way to increase the range of items a zombie can build.

If you manually start a crafting job, an unequipped zombie can finish that single task, but it stops the moment the queue empties. Gear it properly instead of relying on that workaround.

Assign zombies to roles across your base

You are not locked to a single role per zombie. Different tools open different jobs, so you can split the workforce across your production chain.

  • Gatherers: loggers and miners equipped with axes and pickaxes, stationed at the trees or the quarry.
  • Craftsmen: your highest-mastery zombies at benches like the anvil, joiner’s bench, circular saw, and stone cutter.
  • Porters: assigned to the supplier station, they move raw materials from chests and return finished goods to storage.
  • Farmers: garden plots, vineyards, and hop fields, where crop yield scales with mastery.

A common loop is to place one zombie at the supplier station to carry inputs from a chest to a workstation, put a second zombie at the station to craft, and let the supplier haul the finished product back to storage. Once that chain is running, the line keeps itself fed.

Level perks and upgrade zombies with organs

As a zombie repeats a task, it earns experience toward that kind of work. That experience feeds into perks, letting the zombie produce better and more efficient items over time. Because perk options differ, you can build each zombie around a specific purpose rather than making them all the same.

You can also improve a body directly. Place a zombie on the Autopsy table and click its organs to replace them with better ones.

In current play, white and red skulls do not change how efficiently a zombie works, even though corruption is designed to influence a zombie’s skill growth. Mastery from equipment is what determines whether a zombie performs a job.

Unlock more zombies with Reanimation and the Resurrection Table

The two free zombies are only the start. To make more, invest in the Reanimation technology under the Anatomy and Alchemy section of the Tech Tree, then set up the Resurrection Chamber.

Go to the Morgue and move to the west (left) section to find a locked door. Open it to reach the Resurrection Chamber.
Build a Resurrection Table inside the chamber. Lay a zombie on it, then interact with the corpse and fit it with a collar to prepare for resurrection.
Wait for Snake Day, an uncommon day filled with lightning strikes. On that day, interact with the central table in the chamber to route electricity to the Resurrection Table and bring the zombie to life.

How to confirm a zombie is working

A correctly set up zombie stays seated at its station, pulls in the required materials, and begins producing the station’s output, such as Wooden Planks or Bronze Nails. If it just stands and stares, it has no matching tool or not enough Work Mastery for that recipe. Once it is producing, it will keep gaining experience toward its perks with every cycle it completes.
