Graphite is the bottleneck resource between you and steel in Graveyard Keeper. You cannot mine it, forage it, or pull it out of the dungeon. It only exists as a smelted product, which means the whole process comes down to two things: owning an advanced furnace and feeding it coal.
Quick answer: Research Precious Metals in the Building tech tree, then burn 5 coal at Furnace II for 1 graphite (50 seconds) or at Furnace III for 2 graphite (30 seconds).
Tech and buildings required for graphite
Three unlocks have to line up before the recipe becomes visible. Two of them sit in separate tech trees, which is why players often own a furnace, own coal, and still see no graphite option at all.
- Advanced smithing (Smithing tree) — gives you Blueprint: Furnace II, the first furnace capable of making graphite.
- Precious Metals (Building tree) — unlocks the Create Graphite recipe itself at Furnace II and Furnace III.
- Mining (Building tree) — covers Gathering Coal and Gathering Iron ore, so you can actually harvest the fuel.

Coal comes from the Quarry area in the northwest. If you have a teleportstone set there, use it. Otherwise the walking route runs from Sweet home past the Beehouse, through the Refugee camp, and across the river to the Quarry.

From the cabin at the Quarry, head east past the trees. The coal deposit is set into the rocky cliff wall near the river, and it blends into the surrounding stone, so look for the darker seam rather than a free-standing rock. Sulfur and limestone come from the same deposit area.

Each mining action on this deposit yields 25 coal, and the deposit does not run dry. A single trip is enough to keep a furnace busy for a long stretch, since five coal makes one batch of graphite.
Once the zombie iron ore mine is running, it produces coal alongside iron, which removes the need for manual trips entirely.
Smelting coal into graphite at Furnace II or III
| Furnace | Coal used | Graphite made | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Furnace II | 5 | 1 | 50 seconds |
| Furnace III | 5 | 2 | 30 seconds |
Furnace III is a straight doubling of output for the same coal cost and less time, so there is no reason to keep running graphite batches at the lower tier once it is built.

If the graphite recipe does not appear in the furnace
Having a furnace, coal, and fuel is not enough on its own. If the Create Graphite entry is missing from the crafting tab, the cause is the Precious Metals technology in the Building tree still being unresearched. Unlock it and the option shows up on the first tab of Furnace II and every higher tier.
If you need a small amount immediately and do not want to build out the chain yet, the trader Krezvold stocks graphite directly.
What graphite is used for
Steel ingots
This is the main reason to make graphite at all. With the Advanced Smelting technology, combining 2 iron ingots and 1 graphite produces 2 steel ingots. Furnace II takes 3 minutes 30 seconds and 45 fuel per batch; Furnace III drops that to 3 minutes and 25 fuel, and pays out slightly more red tech points.
Graphite powder and black paint
Run a single graphite through the alchemy mill and you get 2 graphite powder. The zombie alchemy decomposer handles the same conversion once it is available. Graphite powder combined with water at the tier one alchemy bench makes black paint, which feeds into ink and, eventually, the pen and ink used at the study table.
Study table points
Studying graphite costs 2 Faith, 2 Science, and 5 energy, and returns 20 green tech points. The study also registers graphite as decomposable into powder, which is what enables the alchemy route above.
Once the furnace, the tech, and a coal supply are all in place, graphite stops being a hurdle and becomes background infrastructure. Mine a stack of coal whenever you pass the Quarry, keep a batch cooking while you handle graveyard work, and you will have steel on hand well before the main story asks for it.
