The world of GTA 6 is the biggest Rockstar has ever built, and the studio has finally put numbers to it. The fictional state of Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map and about three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2, with Vice City sitting at the center as its main urban hub.
Quick answer: Vice City alone is twice the size of Los Santos, and the built-up areas outside the city are eleven times larger than in GTA 5. Overall, the Leonida map works out to roughly 160 square kilometers, about double GTA 5’s 80 square kilometers.

GTA 6 map size compared to GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2
Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North and the game’s head of development, laid out the scale during the recent press push. The headline figure is simple. The GTA 6 map is twice the size of GTA 5’s map and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s.
The exact area is an estimate rather than an official measurement, but the community math lines up cleanly with what Rockstar has said. GTA 5’s map has long been pegged at around 80 square kilometers, which puts GTA 6 in the neighborhood of 160. These figures include some ocean and out-of-bounds space, so treat them as rough scale rather than a precise land count.
| Game | Estimated map size | Relative scale |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 6 (Leonida) | ~160 sq km | Baseline |
| GTA 5 (Los Santos) | ~80 sq km | Half of GTA 6 |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | ~75 sq km | About a third of GTA 6 |

The most eye-catching claim is about the cities themselves. Vice City on its own is twice the size of Los Santos. That is the dense metropolitan core, with beaches, nightlife, ports, business districts, and residential streets.
The bigger jump is everything around it. Nelson said the built-up areas outside the city are eleven times the size of their GTA 5 counterparts. In practice, that means the towns, suburbs, and smaller cities scattered across Leonida carry far more weight than the mostly empty Sandy Shores or Paleto Bay did in San Andreas.
Rockstar has also stressed density over raw size. Nelson told IGN there is a lot to find on your own without objectives, blips, or icons pointing the way. The studio has gone as far as saying that individual rooms across the world were deliberately dressed and photographed, down to who is sitting where and what is on the walls.

The regions of Leonida
Leonida is Rockstar’s take on Florida, and it is not a single sprawling city. The state is split into distinct regions connected by highways, waterways, and bridges. Six major locations have been confirmed so far.
| Region | What it is |
|---|---|
| Vice City | The Miami-inspired urban centerpiece |
| Port Gellhorn | A faded West Coast town with docks and industry |
| Ambrosia | Industrial town beside Lake Leonida |
| Grassrivers | Everglades-style swamps and wetlands |
| Leonida Keys | Tropical archipelago in the south |
| Mount Kalaga National Park | Forests and mountains along the northern border |
Most of that world opens up quickly. Nelson said that shortly after the intro, the full map is available to explore rather than being gated behind story progress.
How long the campaign takes
Size on the map translates into time on the clock. Nelson said his own playthrough back in February this year clocked in at around 80 hours, and that included the main story plus some optional goals with narrative consequences.
That figure only covers the campaign. Between the confirmed activities, the relationship system, and the reworked wanted mechanics, players who chase side content are likely looking at far more than 80 hours across all of Leonida.

Release date and platforms
GTA 6 launches on November 19 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. Footage shown during the extended look was captured on a base PS5, and the game is expected to run at 30 frames per second on console.
For a series where the previous entry kept selling for more than a decade, doubling the map and stacking on that much density is Rockstar’s clearest answer to the obvious question of how you follow GTA 5. The scale is the pitch, and the numbers behind Vice City and Leonida back it up.
